Sadly the death of Raymond Baxter, World War 2 fighter ace and pioneer television presenter was announced this week-end. After distinguished war service, Baxter commentated on many great events, including Churchill's funeral and Concorde's maiden flight. His long-running technology magazine programme on BBC TV 'Tomorrow's World' made him a household name and for many he was the epitome of the sophisticated and witty Englishman.

My favourite quote, 'I have every respect for the Americans - in two and a half tours of duty flying Spitfires they were the only people who managed to shoot me down'.

He will be missed.

Another sad passing...

He is very much part of my childhood with the series, "Tomorrows' World." As a little boy, I didn't realise he has also been a Spitfire Ace, but in later years I found this out.
Well known for his velvet, English broadcasting voice, it's hard to believe that these people (as Marc just pointed out) don't just live forever with us!

Yes indeed, Raymond Baxter WAS a Spitfire ace during WW2. I'll always remember him for doing the commentary whenever the Farnborough air shows were televised. R.I.P
