Week one is done and I have lost 5 pounds! Excited that the diet has been so easy to follow and that the weight is coming off. I feel a little brighter and more alert too.

I think that this week the loss will have been water weight so next week will be tougher!

To the original poster, don't be so hard on yourself! Don't let the magazines try to trick you into looking like a Praying Mantis. Even the U.S. Army is going through a systematic overview of it's weight and measurement charts. None of the current charts count for all the muscle bound weight lifters that are currently in. They are all coming up fat on the weight charts!

Just work on your self to feel healthy and do some sort of activity that you enjoy

Amongst my friends and I, ALL of us think that Christina Hendricks from Mad Men is the BOMB!!

I think I read somewhere that she is a size 14 or 16 or something like that. I haven't a clue what that means, but my wife thinks that cool too.

Dress sizes are tricky. A lady with an out-of-this-world body ratio like Marilyn Monroe or Christina Hendricks may be a size 14 or 16 up top or bottom, but a size 10 or 12 in the waist. Don't forget too, vintage dress sizes are larger than modern sizes. Both Marilyn's and Christina's costumes are tailor-made aswell, so those clothes would not have a high street dress size. (Christina Hendricks = Hubba hubba!)

Congratulations angeljenny on the 5 pounds! :D

Love the classy look - almost makes me wish I was a blonde!

I am trying to make more of an effort every day rather than just every so often.

I like curling my hair with the hair band method from the video tutorials thread as it doesn't take long in a morning when I am getting ready for work.

Next step is eye liner! I love the look with the little flicks at each side so I need to practice.

Recently I was almost forcfully conned into looking at a Glamour mag. w/ a friend. My response was "I am 35, I am going gray I am sagging and have lumps in places unheard of, I am getting wrinkles to boot. I do not need some airbrushed star to make me feel like I shouldn't be who I am." At a size 6, I have a 29 inch waist, it's life to me and I work w/ it. Just being yourself is all you can do and if anyone doesn't like it they can just bugger off in my opinion.

Taken from an internet site:

What Are Christina Hendricks Measurements?
Height: 5’8″ (173CM)
Weight: Currently unknown thought to be around 70 kilograms or 154 pounds.
Measurements: 39DD-30-39
Cup Size: It is estimated that Christina Hendricks has a cup size of DD or possibly F. Please note that her bra size may be a 39DD
Dress Size: 12 or 14
How do we know?
Christina Hendricks measurements of 39-30-39 are taken from a dress she wore on the hit TV show Mad Men. The dress was for sale on eBay to benefit the charity City Of Hope.

I met her at a Firefly convention in London a few years back. Very nice she was too!

Anyhow, all this talk of fitness has inspired me to get back in the gym after nearly a year off. Put about 5lbs back on in the last week :)

Thanks Tishkaminx! I'm happy to see she's only got a 9-inch difference between her bust and hips and her waist. Her modern dresses don't exaggerate the ratio as much as her Mad Men costumes; Hooray for classic styling :D

Those measurements are interesting! I have about a 10 inch difference between my hips / bust and my waist and struggle to find clothes that fit all over. She looks amazing in her Mad Men outfits. I wonder what measurements January Jones has!

I read magazines every now and then but the images of skinny models don't really bother me. I wouldn't want to look just like someone else - just a better version of me would be nice!

If I look at one of the celebrity magazines my overall impression is how grateful I am that I can leave the house with no make up and looking scruffy and not get photographed!

Exactly! I can pop out to the mailbox looking like a troll and nobody cares lol

January Jones' measurements, as given by celebies.com:

34B-24-33. Dress size 6 (US) 36 (EU).

She's quite svelte!

How fast do changes start to show with a diet and exercise routine?

I was thinking about it as I have a work Summer party in the middle of August and I want to feel pretty and not super shy and self conscious like I was last year! I'm not sure how much change is reasonable and possible in that time.

I am on holiday next week and plan on doing lots of walking on the beach (heard that walking on sand is good for the legs?) plus there is a set of about a hundred stairs nearby so I will be up and down those a few times!

You can make a surprising amount of progress quite quickly. In fact, the first six weeks generally sees the greatest results if you're starting from an untrained state. Do remember though with exercise 'no pain- no gain' really is true. Unless you really push yourself your results will tend to be mediocre. When I was training people, I'd always recommend some tough resistance training. If you can build a bit of muscle you burn a lot more calories just sitting around than you do if you have no muscle.

So, if you really want to see results then push yourself. Challenge yourself every day and if you find something easy then find a way to make it harder :)

Is it weird that I like when my muscles ache the next day?! And I like to sort of push through that point where you want to give up.

It is quite exciting to see how much of a change I can make. I am sure there are some things, like overall body shape, that I can't really change but there is a lot I can change!

I am doing low weight / high reps - not sure if that is good or bad but I don't have any heavy weights and I doubt I could lift them.

Personally I'm not happy unless there's some muscle soreness the next day - just as long as it's not a pull or a joint pain.

As for reps you really dont want to go that high. It's all about building muscle - toning is just another word for the same thing. Generally speaking, I wouldn't go higher that twenty reps for any one set. If you can do more than that the weights too light. Muscle building works best in the 8-12 rep range for most people. Don't drop lower than 5 as weights that are too heavy is a good way of pulling or tearing something,

You can make huge changes if you really want to. It's all about diet and the effort you put into working out. I'm went on a journey in the opposite direction to you. I was a quite a skinny 12 stone and decided I wanted to be bigger. I've been as big as 16.5 stone through working hard and eating the right stuff. It's tough and it can become a bit of a mania - so you have to watch out for that. It all depends on how much you want to change yourself. No one else can tell you what you should be happy looking like. Only you can decide that. You can do it if you really want to :)

Here's a little mind trick that worked for me: tell yourself you only eat when you're hungry. Pick your weight (reasonable please, where you will look and feel good forget the charts!) and tell yourself you weigh that RIGHT NOW. Tell yourself these things several times per day and you will make it happen without realizing it. It's slower than dieting but much more effective, and it's served me well for 12 years now. The only time I really gained weight back was when I was pregnant, and I lost the pregnancy pudge the same way. Rudie is right about the mental programming but I think you can do this yourself too :)

But yes, eat healthier and exercise, those are always good for you. The mind aspect is almost always overlooked which is why people to the yo-yo thing

I was aching today! I did leg and ab exercises this evening so the walk to work in the morning might be interesting! I want to see how much I can do - to figure out what I am capable of.

I only have 1.1kg dumbells - not sure what weight I should be using. Maybe I need some more heavier ones but I am using the Tracy Anderson DVD and she said not to use anything heavier than 3lbs. Not sure.

I can't imagine putting weight on - not without eating rubbish and getting fat!
