R.I.P. to a mint Mallory

Thought I'd post this here since I need some sort of therapy...

Friday night I took my girlfriend out for New Years celebration in style. I wore my '39 dated brown double breasted suit along with my late 40's chocolate brown Mallory fedora, she her 40's black evening gown. My Mallory was a real steal, i paid $30 for it last summer and it was in mint condition, in my size.

Went to dinner then clubbing. Storms had rolled in with gale force winds that had gusts of up to 60 mph. Walking back to my vehicle, I was doing great. I've worn hats for 40 years and learned how to avoid calamities in high winds, but high rise buildings caused some irregular backdrafts. My fedora got sucked off my head like a goblin had snatched it. I clawed into the air wildly only to feel my last touch of that luxurious felt as it disappeared into the night. In anger and agony I wandered the street for 20 minutes in the pouring wind and rain desperately searching for my beloved Mallory, but to no avail. I would have gladly chased it down the street like a fool chasing a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...except there was no rainbow. I even went back to the area Saturday morning and found several umbrellas and baseball caps. Even found a paper "HAPPY NEW YEAR" topper, but no Mallory (which surely proves there is no justice in the world).

So there is my sad tale of woe to begin the new year. I can only hope that it is not a harbinger of the year to come for me.

R.I.P. to my Mallory

That happened to me, too. While walking across the Brooklyn Bridge there came one of those wild NYC winter winds and voila! my nice Borsalino trionfo ended up in the river.
I feel for you.

Man. I'm sorry for your losses, lci419 and Aureliano. It's a rotten feeling when you lose a hat in such a manner; especially one that was such a great find in the first place.

That's no fun at all, guys. I had to run after the Whippet I bought from you, Aureliano. Chased it right in to the intersection! :eeek: But I was luckily able to salvage it.

Geez, first your grey Whippet and now this! A shame about the Mallory too.

Reminds me of earlier this year when the county's maintenance idiots went into my office, took my 'sixties Open Road and its original box, and threw them into the garbage. It took six months of ebay searching, but I finally found another 'sixties Open Road...and the good people of Craven County kindly bought it for me. Nothing is better than bidding on a hat, knowing that no matter how high the price goes...you're gonna win. ;)

Thanks guys, I knew y'all would understand. I know it's not like losing a child or dog or something; but to me a hat is more than some bits of cloth with a sport team logo on it that I can buy at Wal-Mart for $5. It's a very personal item. Something I put care and effort into finding, and then deciding "will it work on me?". I'm just saddened that I didn't get to wear it more often and, I feel that I failed in my duty to preserve it better while it was in my custody.

I suppose my only consolations are:

a) At least it wasn't my "favorite" hat

and

b) I have several others that I can wear

Thanks again for the condolences, and I also extend condolences to others whom have suffered the same fate.

Yes, definitely it's the work of the choice that went into that is a big factor. It's hard to find clothes including hats that work well on a person, and when you find them you've got to grab them if possible. Then to lose them is sad. But, I'm happy to hear it wasn't your favorite hat. If I lost my favorite hat, I would be unreasonably obsessed by it for a good long time, and I mean unreasonably.

I'm saddened to hear of the loss of a good hat. But hey! It's the fates telling you to start the new year with a new vintage hat. Your new vintage hat is out there!

I really have to say I am sad for your loss.

However it does point to the concept of what a wind trolley is for, to keep this from happening.:(

Indeed it does. I have one hat with one, but i have deemed it to be too fragile to actually use (I only wear vintage hats). Is there a contemporary maker for them today? You had better believe I will be investing in them forthwith if there are.

That's truely sad. Though a wind trolley would probably work, I would ONLY trust my free hand on the hat in strong winds as i've done for the over 40 years I've worn 'em :)
