QUESTION about cloth and markings: origins

I am not sure to be honest. I have a piece of cloth circa 1955 from when my grandma used to work at Hunt & Winterbottom, and that has the Made In England around it.

I will ask her what she remembers, which is normally quite a lot!

The Tariff Act of 1930 set forth marking requirements for the import of goods to the US. Whether textile manufacturers marked their goods prior to that time, I couldn't tell you. If you're really interested you might try contacting an old time fabric merchant like H. Lesser, W.Bill, Holland & Sherry, etc.....
