Puzzling felt loss on Cavanagh edge

I have a Borsalino Torino that's a pretty decent hat, except for one unusual flaw. Fortunately, it can't be seen from a few feet, but if you are holding the hat, it's pretty obvious. In one spot, on the top side of the Cavanagh edge (or whatever Borsalino called it), the upper layer of felt is missing. The area in question is about the size of a pea. It's right in the center of these pictures. (Look close!)
Any ideas as to what could have caused it?

Guess where the worn spot is.

It's right where your index finger falls when you do this. (I have no intention of even trying to do a repair I love it!)

Funny, before I got down to this post I was gonna say that it appeared to be worn by rubbing! :D It is indeed very cool... :eusa_clap

Cheers,
Tom
