The stripes on the shirt are close enough to harmonize with the plaid jacket, yet are not as bold as the jacket's plaid -- no fighting for attention. The jacket also has a blue windowpane which ties it to the shirt. The red sweater ads a nice dose of color for a more Hollywood look. Smoked specs and big one piece cap without a tie says "I'm on vacation"!

Hello,

Today I tried out a plaid-with-plaid combination, as part of a mainly brown shaded outfit. I wanted to experiment with these, more out of the ordinary, "advanced" so to put it ;) , pattern combinations.

The bowtie has lighter versions of brown, red and green than the jacket, so offering some contrast, plus the white overplaid; all of it in a different plaid design, and larger scale than that on the jacket, so balancing the ensemble. Trousers are almost black charcoal grey, and hat is a coffee brown.

I think it works. What do you think?

I've dug out some old shots from films to show how the mixed themes were often used:

Plaid jacket and striped tie (Went the Day Well)

Plaid overcoat with striped tie (George Sanders in 'Rebecca')

Striped shirt with horizontally striped tie (Cecil Parker in 'The Man in the White Suit')

Prince of Wales check suit and striped tie (David Niven)

Pinstripe suit, horizontal striped tie and checked shirt (Ralph Richardson in Brighton Rock)

Remember, it is possible to go too far! It would be a brave man to pull off this look:
Plain jacket, plaid waistcoat, polka dot tie, striped shirt

.

Not "horizontal", Two Types: "diagonal".

Horizontal: --

Diagonal: /

Curious thing, I can remember realising I was wrong as I wrote it and changing it - obviously I was right first time! I think that's what known as a 'brain wobble'!
That said, I adore horizontal stripes on a tie. The silk ones made by 'Old Town' are an absolute dream:

Last week I made some pictures for a blog. Tie and collar bar are vintage, shirt and waistcoat are reproductions. What do you think? Do they clash?

I like it. I love that shirt. Is that an odd waistcoat or part of a suit? If it is odd what sort of jacket would you pair with it?

Thank you. It is an odd waistcoat. The company is in business for only 2 years and the production costs for good (!) jackets would be too high. There is no use in pretendig and selling cheap unconstructed stuff in one size fits all.

I would pair it with a charcoal suit. I need to try out some more colors. Maybe it even looks good with green shades (with another tie of course)
