Proper G-1 Jacket Fit?

Curious. Your comparative large size seems inconceivable to me. I am six two and 185 pounds and I can't get a jacket with shoulders under 18.5 inches to fit over my actual shoulders and a pit to pit under 23 inches won't zip up. I am a slim build. 27 inch back is ok but 28 inch sleeves are a deal breaker.

No way your jacket would fit me and yet you are bigger than me and it fits you and looks losoe to boot. This metaphysical conundrum must have an answer.

Gosh hahahaha I wish I had a better answer for you. Honestly I was worried about the shoulder measurement when I ordered it also but it works perfectly. What jackets/sizes do you have currently which fit well?

I generally choose 19 inch shoulders if I go custom. I had a jacket that was 22.5 inch chest but I struggled to zip it up and I couldn't breathe. Maybe there's something about the G1 pattern the gussets, action back that makes it work. Of the 50 or 60 leather jackets I have bought, the ones that fit well have a 23.5 inch chest.

yea the bi-swing back has a lot to do with the mobility. I don’t think I would ever risk getting an a2 with a 17.5 shoulder to shoulder measurement.
If you’re looking for a sweet g1 though, I would totally recommend this one; only complaint is that the sleeves run a little longer than they should.

Hey @pmx-berlin I think that G-1 looks like a good fit. Maybe the sleeves are a tad long but nothing excessive.
Looks like a quality jacket with a nice fit.

It looks good. I think you may be able to make a size 42 work too.

You have quite the athletic physique, so down the line you may want to try a more slim fitting pattern (Eastman has a very nice M422 cut).
Not saying there’s anything wrong with the fit you have here, but I remember you going after a form fitting silhouette in your shearling, thus the remark.

I think you can make it work especially if you plan to wear a sweater underneath. I agree that the sleeves are a bit long but they are still fine. The waist area does look a bit loose on you but the shoulders look like they fit you well.

I would say if you feel the shoulders fit right, then stick with that size. The shoulders on these G-1s tend to run on the fitted side. If you feel like you can size down in the shoulders then try a size 42 to help with the sleeve length and waist size and see which one you want to keep.

For reference I’m 6’1” 185lbs and the Cockpit G-1 in size 44 fits me great. I prefer neutral/trim and comfortable fitting jackets, neither snug or loose. I started with a size 42 and wore it for a while. Never really felt comfortable in it because the shoulders felt narrow and eventually got a 44. Much happier with it and lets me wear a light layer underneath. My rule of thumb for Cockpit’s G-1s is to get one size larger than your actual chest size.

Hey @pmx-berlin - I took another look at the picture you posted again today and I actually think you might have room in the shoulders to size down one to a 42. It looks like the shoulder seams may be hanging off of your shoulders slightly instead of sitting on the edge. I can't tell for sure, but you would have a better idea of that. I reiterate that comfort is king though. If a 42 feels too tight/small in the shoulders, it will be distracting.

That's about what a standard pattern G1 is going to look like. I think you wear this one for comfort, not style. At least that's my own thoughts re: standard American G1. I bought one before 'cause I thought it looked cool/classic-- but it was too busy. Sleeves were too wide. Too many extra seams with the under arm gussets and action back. In fact... I feel like if it wasn't for the mouton collar, the standard issue G1 looks very "mall-jacket-ish." Sorry if you're a G1 fan, not trying to pick a fight.

Comfy as hell though-- due to the under arm gussets and action back and wide sleeves.


Now... there are some Japanese made G1's.... but that should be a whole other thread, I think.

Here’s 2 repro g-1 from rainbow country.

Both are size 40. One in seal brown goat skin and one in tobacco brown horse hide.

Same pit to pit (22 inches) and shoulder width (18.5 inches). The horse hide one is ever so slightly longer in the back (25.5)

The softness of the goat skin makes the seal brown one look more fitted. Hopefully with more wear the horse hide one will soften up and hug the body more.

I'm not familiar with G-1s, but both jackets seem a bit long to me. I think a G-1 should be a little shorter. But maybe the waistband is just too wide and that's why the jackets slip down too far? Or because they are new?

The jackets are relatively new. Worn the seal brown goat skin one for 2 seasons, and I’m only starting to break in the horse hide one.

Also I’m only 5’7”, maybe that makes the jacket look longer than they actually are.

I guess I could size down to 38, but I wear these over sweaters on colder days.

Looks good. I would not size down.

I have this jacket and the jacket is actually good sitting length, but has a long front drop and wide knits. My front waist panels curls outwards after wears and the knits rides up a bit. In the vintage photos, some pilots just let the front drop hang and some curl the whole hem in. My best guess for the extra front drop in leather is to take on the wear and tear of the harness buckle when strapped in, if it were just knits it'd blown out after a couple uses. That's my best guess for its function.

I love Navy jackets, they're all gems. Congrats on these pair.
