Guys and Gals,

The first thing I do when we get a new member is check out their profile. It lends some perspective to their posts. I may also find some common ground with them. I know some people would rather remain somewhat annonymous but I would like to see more people make their profile available.

Since we are on the subject, I wish people would put what there location really is and say all the clever cheeky sayings for there signature. It helps to understand the person when you can put there words in the context of where they are. Also it is great to learn there are other members near you.

See, now that I know you're into Hard Boiled Det. fiction, I know we have some common ground...

My favorite author is Raymond Chandler...

Check out an author named Lee Child...he writes about a character named Jack Reacher, and uses the first person narrative style. The Novels are set in modern times.

To prove a point Johnnysan...

There was me thinking you might be a County Antrim man, sipping away at your neat Bushmills (our family have a cottage right beside the Giant's Causeway, near to the Distillery), or, with your Pen Name, possibly an English plantation owner and someone who has a room at Raffles in Singapore...but now I find you are tucked away in sunny Illinois across the pond a wee bit! Helps put me a bit more in the picture..a North American gent who has impeccable taste in whiskey!! LoL :) :cheers1: and good to meet you! ;)

Excellent - thanks for the tip, Bob! Chandler is also my favorite author. I also enjoy Ross MacDonald and Rex Stout, but find that I never developed a taste for Daschell Hammett. Maybe I need to look beyond the Nick & Nora Charles titles. It's a shame that Chandler wasn't more prolific in his writing...there are far too few of his books. The upside is that my retention is terrible, so I can pick up my worn copies in six months and they read like new again!

Thanks also for the lead on Lee Child. I haven't heard of him and am always looking for a good read! It's off to Barnes & Noble for me!

LOL, Paddy...sadly, either of your musings would be a welcome reprieve from the heat and humidity of Central Illinois in August! The real me is just a fat, bald, pastey white guy with impeccable taste in whiskey and reasonably good tase in headwear! I'll lift my next Bushmill's in your honor! :cheers1:

That profile thing really does work, doesn't it!

Thanks for this one. I just read the first chapter of the first Reacher book. Looks very promising. I'm constantly on the search for an author that can match Chandler. It's not an easy task, but Lee Child might just be the closest one yet.

Regarding profile and hard-boiled fiction.

Hey Folks,
Your peer pressure has inspired me to complete my damn profile and be a better online citizen.
Other hard-boiled writers (albeit not detective fiction) you may want to check out are David Goodis (DARK PASSAGE, CASSIDY'S GIRL, BLACK FRIDAY, Charles Willeford (PICK UP, THE WOMAN CHASER), Horace McCoy (THEY SHOOT HORSES DON'T THEY, KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE), Nathanael West (MISS LONELYHEARTS), and, the King, Jim Thompson (A SWELL LOOKING BABE, A HELL OF A WOMAN, THE GETAWAY, AFTER DARK, MY SWEET and of particular interest to Biltmore [about Texas policemen/sherriffs] THE KILLER INSIDE ME and POP 1280). I cannot fathom any fan of Chandler or Hammet not enjoying these books. But what the hell do I know?
Enjoy!
Mud.

Blue eyed angry young man....

Thanks for the titles. I used to be a really prolific reader, but for some reason can't find the time, I stopped reading alot ....when...Let's see...oh yeah when I started having kids. Now between the biz, kids, and everything else I only have about 20 or thirty minutes a day to read before my legs and ass go numb, IYKWIM....

Always wanted a Whippet. Would make a great contrast to our bulldogs - Fatty & Skinny! :)

I've always wanted a bulldog for the very same reason! Great minds really DO think alike. Thanks for the laugh! :)

Hear-Hear...to keeping those profiles updated

IF you're not doing it already, keep those great profiles updated. Some fantastic vintage-look avatars going around too. Makes it all more enjoyable for the rest of us and makes this Class "A" forum more like family! Cheers :cheers1:

One of my favorite series, after the Dirk Pitt & Jack Ryan novels. Now, I'm off to work on my profile, being a fairly new member.
