But what is that divining rod-looking thing for? It doesn't appear to be hooked to the box with wires. [huh]

It is the colonoscopy version of the time travel machine.

Thjere are alot of theories about time travel:
impossible
improbable
possible but not do able
do able but not for a long time
Can't visit past, only the future
Must become infinately large to travel thru time.

All I can say is one of the best time travel stories is in the Simpsons Halloween Episode where Homer fiddles with fixing the toaster in the basement and it becomes a time machine which transports him back and forth thru time. Each time something happens to fundementaly change his present. (And Sneezing on the dinosaurs is hilarious!) Ned Flanders as world tyrant is great too. (It's bliss!)
