We are all familiar with the real pricey hats like Stetson, akubra and borsalino but there have to be manufactors that make good looking fedoras for less money than those above (Scala is one of the cheaper ones I think, but who else make fedoras that doesnt make your wallet cry?

Certainly wouldn't put Akubra in the "real pricey" category.
There's the Christys range available at Hornets Hats - postage would be less for you to Sweden than from Australia.

Of course there's some good deals to be had on ebay for vintage stuff as well - but not sure what tradera.se is like for that?

There's also antique/vintage shops you could try - recently picked up a nice looking German made Stetson for very little money.

I´m fairly new to hats and just assumed that akubra was a expensive hat because of all the discussions about it here :p

I was going through all 223 pages of my search result for Fedora at ebay yesterday, atleast 70 % of the pages was Costume hats and so on ^^

Tradera.se was at first Swedens only Auction Online but now it is a part of Ebay. Not many hats there (stupid swedes :( )

Vintage/antique stores are rare in the part of sweden I live in and if I am lucky to find a good looking hat in such store it´s probably 6cm too small. (Happened today).

Thanks for the tip about Hornets hats, going to take a look soon.

Dorfman Pacific makes hats for Scala & Jaxxon if I'm not mistaken. They have low end wool crushers that look good but don't stand up to wear & weather like a fur felt. They do have some fur felt models as well. I consider Akubra the best bargain out there, real good fur felt & I bought 2 Campdrafts for under $72 including shipping from the Land of Oz. I'm not a stingy wearer so I can mainly speak to wider snap brims, outback styles & western hats.

I live in a "suburb" to Lund (skåne). There are vintage/antique shops in Lund but they have like 90% old-ladies clothes and the rest are mostly furniture. And because I dont have a drivers license it´s rather difficult for me to get to other cities and towns.

I dont know what a stingy is but what I am looking for is something like Stetson´s Whippet (No indy hats for me, thanks).

A stingy is a hat with a very narrow brim, usually 2 1/4" or less.

When you say Whippet, do you mean the Whippet of the 40's or something newer? Because the Whippet has changed several times.

Akubra's prices will depend on the exchange rates between Sweden and where ever you order from. For the U.S. they are very inexpensive right now. If you go to XE.com you can convert the prices of one currency in to your own... in case you were not aware.

Hornets Hats will probably be the next best choice. After that, you will be stuck with mainly wool felt. Some of them look nice, but not too durable. But for a man on a tight budget, they have their uses!

I mean the one on Stetson´s website, the only Whippet i´ve ever seen and it´s my dream hat. (mostly because of the recemblence to Johnny depp´s hat *Fan boy warning*. And what i´ve seen they cost about $100 and that is half of my monthly paycheck (monthly insurence payout) and then shipping to Sweden where it probably will get stuck in customs so I have to pay taxes to get it from them. (They take packages that are shipped into sweden and we can only get them if we pay the taxes (duties?) for it, unless the package is marked as "gift" then they arent allowed to keep it)

Sorry for the negativity.

Many hat sellers are willing to label their international packages "gift." If you find the right hat, zip them an e-mail about your customs problem. You might get lucky.

If I spot anything in my browsing that fits your tastes and price range, I'll let you know.

Since I´m Swedish I´m not used to the insane numbers of hat sellers or other online shops in USA so my own browsing is very limited, but I´d appreciate if you tell me if you find something :)

Also because of my limited browsing for hats outside Sweden I´ve had some bad luck and have only found sellers that even write "International buyers: We do NOT mark packages as "gifts"" on their websites.

Ps. I´m chocked over the friendliness on this site, other communities are full of bad mannered, disrespecting and unpleasant people. I praise thy Thefedoralounge.com and thy followers!

If you do want to with something from Christys (Hornets), that looks like the newer whippet, the Knightbridge looks closest based on crown/ribbon - you can contact them and ask them to bind the brim as well - someone here did it with an Adventurer.

I must have been very tired this morning that I didn't think of these. :eusa_doh:

They are from Akubra, and might be styles you'd like, both at about $65.

The Stylemaster resembles the current Whippet.

And the Campdraft is a duplicate of an old Stetson model that Johnny Depp wears often. (Ignore the shape in the photo, it comes unshaped).

The Campdraft is very popular around here. I used to have one myself, and I can tell you it's a great hat. Here's what it can look like as a fedora; http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showpost.php?p=777486&postcount=3562

And hatsdirect.com carries both, also. I'm pretty sure one of them will write "gift" on the customs form.

I would say Akubra is a pretty good deal for the price/quality. Those low-end Scala hats are junk from what I've seen, and not even worth the low price they're set at. I got my Campdraft for below 100$ (right around 90$), and that's shipped halfway around the globe- and the best part is that it's actually a nice hat!

Welcome to the Lounge, Alexander.

I'd also suggest taking the time to browse the "Post New Hats" and "Ebay Victories" threads. I think those will help you get a better idea of what's out there and what you can get for your money. Also, keep an eye on the Classifieds here at the Lounge. Some really spectacular hats go through there.

Oh, and I have two Stylemasters and I really love them. Pictures of my mid-brown one are around here somewhere, but I've never gotten around to posting pictures of my mid-gray. If I remember correctly, though, you should be able to find pictures of the Stylemaster in almost all available colors posted on the Lounge in various threads. Anyway, my Stylemasters are my only fur felts, so I don't really have much with which to compare them, but I can say that I really enjoy them.

Good luck on your search!

Welcome to the Lounge.

The Stylemaster is a great hat. I wouldn't trade mine.

IMHO, it's better to pay a little extra money to get a quality fur felt hat than it is to buy cheap. The hat will fit better, feel better, and last longer. You'll save money in the long run. Also, a good fur Akubra isn't going to cost you all that much.

If you have the time, start trolling eBay. You can find good vintage hats at great prices.
