Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

Rescued this old dog as it was my size. Looks like I'll be digging through forum archives to get up to speed on filling moth divots ... at least sweat's in great shape. Initially I thought hat was an Arminto (which'd be number three for me) but compared to another, crown's not as tall and brim is 3.5" vs 3.75" so I'm not sure. I'll get around to a deep cleaning eventually (or Robert @belfastboy will ; ) Meanwhile I don't mind at all wearing as is. Love these old Stetson's just wish it wasn't so hard finding them! Never mind in anything other than the super small sizes.

Dark felts moth nibbles are easier to repair (in that the repair is not as noticeable as it is on light colour felts) But if you have any questions on the repair just shoot me a message.

That's a cool one, love the double stacked 3ply ribbons. Looks like it had its BE altered at some point in its life. Would be curious to see the LOT # on this No 1.

yeah I hear ya, mirror technique works well though. Or sometimes I put my phone to video mode and just take a clip of putting the lens near the area and see what you capture after.
BE = bound edge; RE = raw edge

The tags/labels are great to see, but it’s not worth damaging those old sweatbands. If I have any doubts I don’t even try.

Is the sweatband sewn at the back? I think that would comfortably make this a 30s hat.

It is sewn, Daniel and I did include above a (small, seller's) pic of multi celled label (643 block). Looking for lot# was what I was fretting over in reply to Ross. I think, if sweat was not sewn, that'd be pointing to an even earlier hat no? Here's another seller pic of size tag, which I have. It's worth noting tag is cut from very thick stock. She blew some stitching out while poking around under sweat.

Yes, if the sweat is not sewn on a Stetson that is generally a pre-30s hat.

It is one decent way to distinguish between the 20s and 30s hats; the longer three-celled rectangular tag is usually 20s/30s, so the back of the sweatband can be a helping factor in saying, “This hat is probably from…”

Just catching up on this thread - thanks for that note above. I always assumed the Real Nutria posted today had a six ply ribbon that was split to make the tails of the bow. Don't know why I thought that, but it is also clearly made from two heights of three ply ribbon carefully assembled to appear as one.

Very interesting... the ad points to a silk underbrim as in this old hat. I never quite figured out what it might have been used for, but maybe rodeo/show makes sense.

At first I didn’t think they were talking about the entire underbrim, just the wide, homburg like binding as it is on my hat. The shading in the ad doesn't help much with the details I started looking for more ads and found a 1937 one with specific details. So, mines no Show Boy. Close, but no cigar. In an effort to limit confusion I deleted the earlier post. Still looking to ID it and finding a real Show Boy now.

The shading in the ad doesn't help much with the details I started looking for more ads and found a 1937 one with specific details. So, mines no Show Boy. Close, but no cigar.
