I suspect you are correct and the beautiful embroidery is likely a home-made project. Did Stetson even make the ultra-wide brim Sombrero style?

Yes, they did - I think it's mentioned in coffee table book on Stetson hats ("Stetson Hats"), but I can't find where. I believe what it said was that they built the sombreros, then sent them somewhere else for the embroidery-work.

While Stetson sombreros are rare, I stayed away from that one because it looked like someone had sewn a Stetson hatband into a non-Stetson hat. Could be wrong though.
That sure didn't occur to me. It would be a ton of work.
The edge binding on that hat is superb, too. No, I think it's
a real Stetson and a rare one, too. I almost bought it to hang
it on my wall. But I practically decorate in hats already, so...

A rare (now) Stetson Sombrero. Stetson made crowns in Philadelphia and sent them to Mexico for ornate trim. This one sports an 8" brim and a 10" crown and 3" of gold and silver thread on brim and hatband. This style was popular 1880-1915.

I have real doubts about the hat in question, but hey ... it's not my $486

1920's/'30s pencil curl western

...7 3/8 (more like 7 1/2) arrived in typical Tom Horn bash, but I changed back to the original telescope crease. No markings on sweat - probably '30s replacement? (I added the hatband)

Thank you, Victor. That a great scan of a wonderful photo. Amazing what detail you can see with an 18x22" glass plate negative.:eusa_clap :eusa_clap
Yep, like the guy by the cook fire has the ribbon bow on the right hand side. Ladies hat or on backwards or just doesn't matter on the trail????
