The plus fours and knickerbockers those two kids are wearing and the suits and blazers being modeled by the other two children are completely different to me. The kids in the plus fours look a lot cuter to me, since they're dressed as children would have dressed eighty years ago, although the one in the jaunty bowler exudes a sort of pool-hall vibe. The Hickey kids, though, are dressed as little adults. I don't think I see anyone denying the pretentions to power that the suits connote; rather, I think it's whether or not people find these pretentions vile or not. Clearly, power and sexuality are viewed as two completely different things. I'd agree that sexuality can be more visually disturbing, but I still find that undercurrent of power to be a little disgusting. I don't think it's just the suits. I think it's the whole package: the way they're posed, that jaded look in the eyes, the ridiculous hairdos. There's just something about those kids that weirds me out.

No, its not their clothes its their pose! The outfits are great, their poses make them look like faux gangstas, its silly.

Well I personally think this guy was just trying to impress his editors, write some crappy expose, make some waves, etc. He's really making a mountain of a mole hill, and he does poorly at that.

Matt it is simply the double standard that exists for boys and girls- An overdressed boy looks "business-like" and an overdressed girl calls to mind exploitave images of Jon Bennet Ramsey and that seedy ilk.

Bottom line it in that there are no beauty competitions for boys yet there are for girls. So to equate it in some people's minds they conjure up the disgusting image of littel girls prancing around like mini-hookers and somehow assign that obliquely to the boys as well.

In most of the ads girls are represented with an overage of make up and jewelry which leans toward the sexploitation mindset. Ads with boys end up looking like a bunch of bored-looking boys that were made to sit still and wear dorky duds while they'd rather be out playing. Boys dressed up must be the male equivilent of sexploitation in some people's minds.[huh]

Yo, those guys are too sharp!!:eusa_clap

What's with the mortuary wagon? These guys definitely don't look like someone just died to me.

What I'd really like to see are the same two after about thirty minutes to an hour after this shot was taken when the shoes have gotten dusty and scuffed, the socks have fallen down around the ankles, a button's popped off and/or the remaining ones are unbuttoned, there's a three corner tear hanging out somewhere noticeable, the tongues of the ties are flapping over the edge of a pocket, and the bowler has a uniquely unorthodox bash lol lol lol

Seriously though, these guys look like kids enjoying the attention that comes with being dressed "all grown up" and "lookin' good" and who will milk it for all it's worth :)
Did you notice how one's workin' the camera projecting that "tough guy" stare for all he's worth while the other looks like he's checkin' out a girl or speculatin' on some kind of mischief?

When I look at the little tycoons in the Hickey Freeman ad, I see guys look like they have forgotten or never knew what it's like to be a kid - especially a boy with all the wonderful perks of running, throwing, tussling, scrapes and/or bruises, yelling, teasing, startling, and discovering all the wonderful things to be found in dirt, mud, water, and over/under anything.

*sigh* Maybe that's the problem: there's no need for beauty contests or praise to validate dressing with style when repression (or is oppression?) works so well.

I said the same thing for these young men, their poses are outrageous and over the top.

Those fellas look fine. Yeah its overly posed, but what you gonna do? Maybe a wee bit Miami Vice, but they look like beach going kids. I think its cause they are not smiling. Adults like to see kids smiling. Not smiling means seriousness, seriousness means intent. Intent means sex. Or, could be the hands in the pockets...[huh]

Isn't this a shot out of some movie I saw a while ago? Just can't remember the name.... I believe one of the characters name was Rooster...imagine that!

Its a shot from the film Idlewild.

and the one character works in the family mortuary....when they grow up.

Miss N does it again :eusa_clap
The only true musicals I willingly watch are Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, anything and everything with Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers in it, Sound of Music.
Okay, not true. Now that I think about it, there's also Annie Get Your Gun and a few others, a very few. I'm one of the minority that just could not get past the first fifteen minutes of Rent (I seriously loved the theme though ;)). Knowing that those sharp little dudes is a screen shot from Idlewild is making me want to rent it.

Robin Givhan, who wrote the article, is no idiot. However if she tries hard she may work her way up to it.

Consider this article of hers: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/21/AR2005072102347.html

And it's this sloppy mindset that brings forth images of snot-nosed brats darting between their sweatpants-and-sneakers-wearing parents filing into the funeral/wedding/misc event, fitting right in with every other disrespectful, no class bum.

Here are some true gems from a woman that, evidently, thinks we should all be wearing GAP jeans with pre-torn ball caps:
"They are not classic; they are old-fashioned. These clothes are Old World, old money and a cut above the light-up/shoe-buying hoi polloi," or "The usual advice is to dress appropriately. In this case, an addendum would have been helpful: Please select all attire from the commonly accepted styles of this century."

I think the Roberts' look great. But hey, what do I know?
