Not sure about this one. The seller on eBay thought it was 40's, someone here guessed mid-50's, and I personally have no idea. Any guesses as to the vintage?

I was thinking the same thing. We're going to be seeing a lot of hats that we've already seen before, unless this thread is specifically for new vintage hats only. And in that case I can't help but think that it would take away some of the thunder of the regular "Post New Hats Here" thread.

Alessandria dimensions but a short-hair Velour(suede) finish and thin felt band. 1950's likely. No script on factory tag.

Borsalino

This is a beautiful pre WII Borsalino made for the German market (size 6 Punti) that arrived today. It might be late 20s according the owner. The hat is in great condition and fits perfect. It holds a very special meaning to me based on a personal story / history I was told about it. I will show more in the Borsalino thread.

I have a question, are they called boaters or Pork-Pie's?

They are boaters. Hard straw, flat top=boater. A pork pie is the name of a crease, which is formed from a normal crown (rounded, but sometimes lower than regular crowns). Pork pies can be made of felt or woven straw, usually Milan straw. Or should I say straw and felt hats can be made into pork pies.

That's a great hat. Where do you see them for sale? Also, so far as you know, do the pre WWII Borsalinos come in a wider brim, say 2 5/8 or 2 3/4?

Just a little more to say...

Pork pie. See how the similar shape is just the shape of the hat's crease? A real boater can only be made of hard straw, and the crown's shape is final. No way to adjust. It's hard to imagine just how hard the straw is on one of those boaters unless you feel it in person. Feels almost like cardboard, to me. Boaters, being so hard, can be uncomfortable if your head is unusually shaped. Brad Bowers was kind enough to show us this bit on head-conforming Bon-Ton Ivy Sweatbands back in February. The concept was also used on hard felt hats, like derbies.
