Thanks for all the positive comments, Yes it went on it's second maiden voyage this AM. TLH

Vic - that's the coolest straw hat I've seen. I was going to go for the traditional thin black ribbon, but seeing yours, I'm going to ask Optimo to do something very similar :)

Well, I might now be able to wear a vintage straw hat in the rainy conditions we're having here of late.

By the way, what's "Bangora"?

Isn't Bangora a type of 'straw' made of rolled paper?
Yep. I get a Bangora western almost each summer...
Bangora straw is sometimes referred to as Bandera straw and Bangkok weave. Bangora straw hat bodies are actually made out of paper of a lower grade "Washi," usually made in China. Most of the times, the Bangora hat bodies are unglazed and tend to be less durable

Like this one Gene. Where did you procure this item? Made in US & waterproof. Doesn't sound like a typical cheap bangora that I'm used to out of Mexico.

Any idea on when it dates from?

According to BillySpew - Miller Bros purchased Adam hats in Feb 1955, so it has to be later than that, however of the later '50's ones I've seen they stopped putting the Miller Bros names one them at some point in the before the '60's. They also changed the liner logos sometime in the late '50's/early '60's to a more simplified version. I'm assuming that it's thus around 55-58.

Certainly is an interesting hat!

'Twas a recent Ebay auction. (Might not be from Mexico, but I did get it cheap! ;) ) It's obviously coated in something which provides the 'waterproofing'. The hat is rigid but in a style and shape that I like. We'll see how many rain drops this thing will handle before turning to mush.

:) i just won this hat its a bound edge cavanagh
the crown looks really high
what do you folk think?
any idea of age?
Ouch. Since it says "Cavanagh Edge" on the
sweatband, it once had a Cav Edge. If it doesn't have
one now, and instead has a bound edge, that means it
was cut down at some point in the past.

Judging from the design on the edge of the sweatband,
which was also present on my really nice OR-style Cav western
fedora, I'd guess 50s. Famously hard to tell with Cavanaghs
without a very fine scan of the liner. Is there a price tag inside
the sweatband? I bet it's for $25, a nicer Cav.

I watched those two Cavanaghs, as I believe they actually do have Cavanagh Edges under the binding. Looking closely, they appear to have more relief on the edge than would be typical of just ribbon. It wasn't unheard of for the factory to offer bound Cavanagh Edges, but there probably is no way to tell if these were bound at the factory, unless the workmanship seems to match up with the rest of the hat.

I'd say both of the hats from that seller are probably mid-'50s.

Those brims seem way too stingy for the mid fifties Cavanaghs and the crown and ribbon are the standard dimensions associated with the 2-1/4" + brims.

hmm interesting, keep the knowledge flowing im enjoying this.

so are you saying rlk, that the brim width for my style of hat from the time it appears to date from is unusual?

the hat hasnt arrived yet so we'll have to see what it looks like in person.
