Uh, I did say that. Urgh. My subconscious has a sense of humor.

By the way, if it *doesn't* work, then what you can do is remove the binding on the edge of the brim. I guarantee you'll have no problems then; I did this with an old Knox with a curled edge, because the ribbon was not going to stretch. I got an ordinary stitch-removing tool from a sewing place; the holes around the brim don't show unless you're an inch or so away.

I did as you suggested and it worked perfectly. My vintage hat-stretcher arrived shortly thereafter and I stretched it to a 7 1/4. I did this three times, and now it's perfect. In addition, the stretching flattened out the bumps on the side where the front brim snapped - a pleasant bonus. I now have exactly what I've been looking for: a high-crowned, wide-brimmed, jet black fedora. Unfortunately my camera recently died, so no pics yet - you definitely would not recognize this hat.

I'm a backdoor Johnnyphi owner

Thanks to Razzman for selling this Johnnyphi Adam. He never wore it because it was a bit too big. I got "into" all this after the bulk of the Johnnyphi hats were gone, so this was my lucky break to snag a 7 3/8 when I had the chance. Heaven, I'm in heaven. . .

That Stetson looks really nice on him cynroux...

You picked a good one, and the hat's nice too! :)
I like what you said about your guy slowly dipping his toes in the vintage pool- I refer to our entire family's foray into vintage stuff as "stepping into the very deep waters of vintage clothing".

Fair warning: hanging out here in the Hats section - especially on this and the "What Hat are you wearing today" threads will cause a lady to start to babble almost incoherently things like "hm, he really needs a Campdraft, and a Fed IV, oh and definietly a vintage Borsalino, blah blah blah... " Until at last your brained is fried from seeing all the wonderful gents here modeling their fabulous hats... that you begin mail ordering him new hats and scouring evilBay for vintage hats...

Welcome to the fray, BTW I love your avatar pic girlfriend!

I just purchased a modern Summer Stetson for my beloved. He's slowly beginning to dip his toes into the vintage pool (and I am trying valiantly to resist simply shoving him in!). Goodness knows he has the looks for it.

So far, so good. :)

Beautiful Jabos...

Razzman's loss is most definitely your gain! This looks GREAT on you especially with those baby blues of yours. Good choice, sir! That thin ribbon looks very sharp. How's the missus and your son like this hat? And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak...

I hadn't thought of it, but it is light. The felt is thin but stiff. I don't know if that is a sign of quality, lack of quality, or just the way it is. The hat has a $5.95 price tag and is an Adam Royal quality. Anyone know the possible date?

Thanks for the compliment. My wife likes it, and to the kiddies it is just another of Daddy's hobbies, one of many. My wife says she likes the hats but I don't think it is making her heart beat so that she can hardly speak, except when she looks at the bank statement!

MrP, the Colony and especially the Chatham...

are terrific and both look great on you sir. Good thing HATCO ain't close to where we are- sounds dangerous...

I was in Garland on some business Monday and couldn't resist a quick swing by HATCO. When carter and I went there a couple weeks ago, I saw a prototype hat there called the Colony; open crown, 2 1/2" bound brim, bark colored; and I passed it up for the black Open Road. I had regretted it since and went by to see if it was still there. What luck; it was! It was in perfect shape and so I grabbed it. Also, because I have no control in there, I bought a beautiful mink colored Chatham with a 2 3/4" brim. Here are the pics:

The Colony - open crown.

I creased it with a somewhat coarse, wide center dent and moderate short side dents, leaving the crown at 4 3/4" high and 4 1/4" in the back. I then opened the centerpoint of the sides to remove any tapered look there was.

that last line gave me a good laugh, right here at the computer ...

Try wearing the hat for her, after the kiddies have all gone to sleep and you two are alone with the bedroom door locked... She may change her tune...;)

Ooooh, it was already too late for me even before I posted on this thread. I've been scouring for the right hats for him for over a year and you're right...the gents on this thread help model what looks great AND help me empty my purse! And I already have a most time consuming habit of clothing myself already.

And thanks! The avatar is a crop from a photoshoot with Stacey Barich at Atomic Cheesecake in Baltimore. I blame her for shoving me headfirst into that deep vintage pool. Your avatar is very lovely as well. I'm a sucker for black and white photos.

Thank you, sir. I remembered your posts with it and that Dobbs Marquis as well, I believe. They had one of those just like yours also but I did not buy it as I have three black ones I wear already, though not with that burgundy accented band.

Not the oldest one I have but it has all the qualities. Increadably soft even resting on one finger will remove the crease from inside. As far as I can tell it has not been used before.
7-1/8 LO
Crown 5-1/2"
Brim 2-1/2"
interesting brown cotton like ribbon

Thanks Buler, I am actively searching for these. This one happens to be good. The long oval makes it easier to wear.

What a beauty! This hat has a 5" crown, a 2 5/8" brim, still has the original $10 price tag in it, and is in awesome condition. I thought I'd take some shots of it for posterity since I will most likely have it cleaned, blocked, and the sweatband replaced in the near future. The reed was exposed at the back and it left a green stain where it oxidized so I removed a portion of it to prevent any further staining. Fortunately, you can't see it after adding a pugaree. FYI, this hat didn't come with a ribbon or pugaree and I hijacked the black one from a newer vintage Dobbs milan I own.
