Friedrich Steinberg Herrmann & Co. Hutfabrik Luckenwalde (STECO), J. Hückel´s Söhne, "N.P.U" (Non Plus Ultra), "Exquisit", F.P. Size 7, 153 grams possibly early to mid 1930s. The Stiff Felt body plus Band + Binding were made by J. Hückel´s Söhne and I was able to find the "N.P.U" trademark. See below for details. Usually the JHS paper label size is plus one the actual size but this one might be 61 cm. It's possible the sweatband and liner were supplied by STECO to JHS or applied by STECO.

Luckily, I was able to find that the N.P.U. (Non Plus Ultra) trademark was used by Friedrich Steinberg Herrmann & Co. Hutfabrik Luckenwalde.

Borsalino in a natural color with a 7 cm brim. Bought this hat for 5 euro (10 including shipping). Very soft felt, needs a little steam and clean up a bit, but according to the seller it was in a worse condition. Except from the lining, i think the condition is good. Also like the brimedge.

A trio of hats sold in France caught my eye. The seller listed them as size 56cm, but they appealed to me so I took a chance

This one is closest to the stated size, it's a 57 and a half, more or less.
Let's start with its maker: Carlton

I have a few Carltons in my collection and they are very well made hats. I believe they were commissioned from several French hat makers.

This one looks like a product of the 60s or 70s and the origin seems to be Flechet or Morreton for the type and finish of the felt. I like the color of the felt mix and that of the ribbon

Alas, the size is too small for my head.

Carlton "Superior" size 57cm. Unlined with mixed blue/gray felt and a very well made texture.
The brim is 5.5cm, the ribbon is 4cm and the height at the lowest point of the crown is 10.5cm.

From France comes a hat made in East Germany. This one also has its charm.

For the first time I found an "Elegant" with a mixed felt, very similar to Italian/French hats from about fifty years ago.
I am not very familiar with this brand of hats and considering that it was in the lot my curiosity won.

The type and finish of the felt are good and the texture and coloring are well done.
It looks like an Italian Cervo with some French influence, but I honestly think it is a product of the DDR.

I like the color of the felt melange and that of the ribbon.
This time the size is too large for my head.

"Elegant" size 60 full centimeters. Unlined with a mixed felt of brown/dark green color and a very well made texture. The brim is 5.5 centimeters, the ribbon is 3.5 centimeters and the height at the lowest point of the crown is 10.5 cm.

This is the second one that I have in my hands in a couple of months and in both I found some character and also a good construction in a world of hats profoundly different from the current one.

The third musketeer of the trio of hats bought in France you have already seen worn a few days ago

It is the only one I can wear and I consider myself lucky because it is a magnificent hat.
There is little information to identify the manufacturer.

On the inner lining there is a Latin motto "Pluribus Unum - Marque Dèposée" together with an eagle with a shield and a series of stars.
On the sweatband the name of the shop or hatter "Chapelier Specialiste - LABOLLE - Rue Plantagenet - Angers".
No other indication, except the size under the sweatband 59/6.

The felt is thick and dark brown in color finished with a velvety surface.
The sweatband is 5.5 cm wide and the finishes make me think of a hat from before the Second World War

These are the measurements: the raw brims are at 5.5 centimeters, the ribbon is 4 centimeters and the lowest point of the crown is 11 centimeters.

A magnificent hat found by pure chance or hazard, but so it is here. It has arrived to keep company with its compatriots

You saw it worn some time ago and, for it, I broke the rules of engagement by spending a little more than the budget to have it

Identifying the manufacturer was easy: the seller knew Italian production well and having bought some hats over the years, they are rare on the Italian market, from "La Familiare" I had no doubts.

Two types of production can be found from this hat factory: high quality with first-rate felts and finishes and low quality towards the end of their economic cycle in the mid-seventies.

"Cappellificio La Familiare - Montevarchi" "Bolivar" is the name of the hat.
The paper label shows, in print, the type of hat "Bolivar" Senior written in pen and "Misto" also in print.

The felt is soft, green in color, finished with a mixed surface with light inserts.
These are the measurements: the overstitched brims are at 6.5 centimeters, the ribbon is 1 centimeter of the same felt as the hat and the lowest point of the crown is 10.5 centimeters.

A rare hat from a minor Italian production that required a small sum of money above the budget, but it was totally worth it.

Have to declare this one the clear winner, Daniele. Gorgeous hat. E pluribus unum was the (unofficial) motto of the US and the liner logo suggests a link with America with the eagle holding the shield and the 44 stars surrounding it. I suspect though the manufacturer just used this picture because it looked cool. Whatever the case: the hat deserves all the stars it can get.

Incredible hat. Good condition and great felt. No label anymore but i guess it's '50's/'60's. We don't see often usa hats over here, so i am very pleased with this one.

Thanks Stefan for your considerations and your analysis on the brand. It is very generic anyway and I think I bought another one a few years ago, in the Mantua find, which has the same lining.
I will calmly go and look for it, in the meantime I will enjoy this small or large, according to taste, gem in velvety brown.

Nice find, Marcel. I particularly like the milk chocolate colour and that wide ribbon.

When US maker hats turns up over here, you just have to grab them! Especially a Cavanagh like that.
