This panama is sold to me as a Borsalino, but i am in doubt if this is a Borsalino. It is made in Italy, so it could be. It's a genuine montecristi made in ecuador. The condition was not that good, but after some steam the form came back. Except from a little damage in the top of the crown, the hat looks good again. Unfortunally the size 58 is more like a 57 so it doesn't fit me. Luckily my wife is a 57, so she is happy now I bought this hat for 12 euro including shipping costs, so only the leather sweatband is more worth then that ;-)

I glued a piece of grosgrain ribbon in a similar colour to the straw on the hat's inside to reinforce the area if the split. It hid it a bit but mostly did it to stop it from spreading.

I used a light crafter's spray glue purchased at Michaels.

I think any light spray glue would work. My concern with using too heavy/thick a glue might show onto the outside or leave a hardened spot. I sprayed the ribbon and then laid it in place inside the hat. I also fixed another Panama where the straw had split at the pinches with patches of leather. It worked too but the grosgrain ribbon is better as it is lighter in weight/mass.

I’m no hatter or carpenter but I have used this

to work on this as well as a couple of Monticristi’s. If it’s a tight seam crack, a small amount worked into the crack and surrounding area will stabilize it. Dampening the area being worked on can help. The glue is water soluble but waterproof upon drying. I’ve never attached a stabilising patch but I’ve seen linen and silk used.

Esther Weiss spoke of using bookbinding glue.

This is what I said to myself when I saw a couple of horrible photographs of the hat.

Then I saw the inside and decided to buy it, despite the vagueness about its size.

Mossant - Leon, considering that, Leon retailer located at 21, Rue Daunou - Paris always has a preponderant role in the brands of the hats sold by him.
This is a black firm felt Mossant, quite brimmed, for a homburg. Arrived in perfect shape after many years of being made.

Perfect inside and out, except for a small amount of dust which is a must on black felts.

These are the measurements: the crown at its maximum expansion is 13 centimeters, the ribbon is 5 centimeters and the perfectly curled wings are 6 centimeters.

The size is 5 in the French scale, therefore a 57 cm. in Europe and a 7 1/8 in the US

Has anyone heard of a Royal Stetson Casual? It features a felt band and over welt brim.

I picked this up from a local elderly lady who said her Dad owned it and that it has been stored in her closet in the Marathon box for 30+ years. It is very clean with no moth bites or other damage and the sweat is supple and fully intact.

Circa 1930 Stetson Select Quality. Newly arrived and the first layer of dust dry-brushed off. This doesn’t quite fit me, but the size skews the opposite way I’m used to. Especially for these older hats. A quick look behind the sweat does not show a size tag, but it measures out as a size 7-5/8.

After I condition the sweat I may try to find a lot number or other info behind there.

2-1/2” brim, 5-1/2” crown.

Borsalino export qualität (German market) in a pearl grey colour called Vaiato, which is one we have not seen before. Another hat in a camber style. Lovely hand to the felt. Not as old as I had expected, but what does it matter if it's this nice?

Two really nice Mossants, Stefan, and the Vaiato is such a stand out Borsalino. Love the colour.

Thanks, Steve. The Mossants are decent enough later production hats. The Vaiato is indeed an easy winner; don't think I've seen one coloured this light.
