I’m hugely impressed with the quality of this pilgrim. I wasn’t expecting a hat of this caliber. It’s in fantastic condition too. The size is US 7 ¼ or 58cm. The brim is a generous 2 ⅞ inches! It’s every bit the equal to the Royal De Luxe Open Road of the same era.

The green sweatband is quite unique and a wonderful addition to my collection.

John Valtz & C. Andorno Micca "Extra", measures 58cm, missing Paper Label. This came from a seller in Berlin and I am not sure on the dating. The liner is stitched in place but I am fairly certain there were later modifications (ribbon / bow and over welt). Regardless it has a really great look and the felt is really fantastic. John Valtz & C. Andorno Micca is connected with Gosso Valtz and Co. so hopefully Daniele will comment (see link).

Royal Stetson in a fantastic gray with a heather finish. The open crown is approximately 5 ½” and the raw edge brim is 2 ¼” wide. Not labels hiding behind the sweatband. It measures as a US size 7 or 56cm.

Incredible find, Steve. These Valtz and Grosso Valtz hats are almost impossible to find. This description of the company is taken from "The Hats of Valle Cervo" book:

The Grosso Valtz e C. hat factory was founded in Andorno in 1885 on the initiative of 15 hatters as a general partnership. Just two years later the "modest and inadequate capital" forced the founders to co-opt fifteen new partners. The mixed financial results of the company «thinned out the number of members» in 1920 the members, reduced to 12, in order to «enliven the company with young elements» associated 6 new owners «chosen from the families of the old members».
The company, already the owner of one of the most functional factories, in the second half of the 1920s renovated and expanded the premises and added some machinery to the handwork with which it achieved "a daily production of 500 hats". At the helm of the factory for many years we find Maggiorino Guasco, a first-rate hatter who already in 1882, at the General Exhibition of the products of the Biella district, was awarded a medal for his professionalism.
Still craftsmanship, accuracy and elastic pricing policy give Grosso Valtz hats those characteristics with which they establish themselves «not only in Italy but also in the main foreign markets where they manage a large export»

Stefan, Thank you for background information on Grosso Valtz e C. hat factory. The latest I could find on John Valtz are snippets from 1963 and 1966.

Barbisio fedora in grey subbranded Cellini. Size 59 with the bound brim at 5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Nice malleable felt with a great hand. Nothing really wrong with this hat except for the liner, which needs either a good bath or a replacement. Weighs 99 grams. No labels inside the hat.

Barbisio Supremo stingy brim fedora in what I'd say is olive green. Size 59 with the overwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. In excellent condition this one. Weighs 105 grams. Again no labels inside the hat.

Some chafing on the binding and again the liner is ready to be replaced or cleaned because it is grimy. The hat itself is in good shape though. Cool looking hat. Again no labels inside the hat.

All three hats can be found in the classifieds (in one go).

Approx 1 7/8 Brown Grosgrain Ribbon

I felt like this was one I needed to take a shot on. Listed as a “100% Wool Felt Trilby” I didn’t see any reason to believe any of those things were true. In hand it appears to be a medium/long hair fur felt with a very soft finish and it’s nearly 3 inch brim would outsize most folks definition of “Trilby” (except maybe Joao). Failsworth, a UK hat maker in Manchester had the UK Stetson manufacturing license starting in 1949... which seem to account for most of the Failsworth manufactured hats that turn up here. Occasionally though an actual Failsworth branded hat does pop up And I am happy to add this one to the collection. I’m not sure the age of this hat.. Stefan indicated it is a more modern offering based on liner logo.. though the term “more modern” around here often can mean anything from the 1970s/80s to current. Would love to narrow down a bit. In the end though age is not of too much significance as if this hat was made even last week and at this quality level… it would be even more impressive.

A very fine looking hat. Joe. I would hazard a guess and say the hat is either from the seventies or early eighties. Failsworth still exists, but doesn't make furfelt hats anymore (they do still offer woolfelt hats).

I agree with Stefan's approximation. I'd put it at the earlier vintage.

This one went awol and was thought stolen. I think the Danish postal system just messed up, though they won't admit it.

Anyway, it finally turned up and was delivered.

It’s a smart looking hat no matter the decade. Quite a good find! It’s always nice when the description is slightly off and you land on something decent.

Thank you Steve. It is really well made with impressive proportions and wonderful petting felt. I was going to ask your impressions of it before purchasing. But I decided I’d just go ahead and let it be a surprise. I am very happy with it.
