None of the 25’s I’ve owned and handled were like this. Even threw a black one in the garbage once. I was down on the 25. Now, not so much. A nice addition to the OR lineup. My experience with 25's as well. Glad you found "the one", I knew there had to be a few out there somewhere.

Trimble in size 7 1/2 with “Exclusive Floating Fit” sweatband. The felt is soft and thin, but not particularly dense. It’s a lightweight that molds and reshapes easily. The brim has a lot of flange to it. The open crown is 5 1/2” and the brim is 2 3/4” with narrow binding. The felt reminds me strongly of modern Borsalino fedoras made for the religious market.

Just got my new to me Akubra Banjo Paterson, my first Heritage collection hat. I really like it. Felt is nice, comfortable fit, I did have to steam it and shape it a little for my long oval head. Its in great shape, looks like it was hardly worn. I can tell it's going to get a lot of head time once it cools down again.

Couldn’t pass up this 40s/50s Royal Stratoliner even though it’s too small for me. As nice as felt gets in my experience. Found it in an antique store. Will make a nice gift for someone.

Mossant fedora in grey for Gérard Sools. Colour is called "charcoal" and it's unusual to find an English colour name on a Mossant hat. Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown fairly low at 9,5cm at the center dent. Nice hand to the felt and the hat is lightweight at only 90 grams. Would have liked the flange in the back to be less steep though.

Thanks, Joe. It is something I see now and then on a hat. Have to check if it is something done just by Mossant or by other makers as well.

I received a new hat today! It’s a Stetson Special Edition Hemp Stratoliner. I first thought they didn’t include the plane pin but I found it loose in the bottom of the box so no biggie.

Anyway I‘ve been wanting another nice straw hat for the summer but it had to be one that‘s durable and that a sudden North Carolina foothills rain shower won’t ruin. I’ve been intrigued by Stratoliners for some time now, so a straw version in hemp kind of made sense. I think this will definitely fit the bill. Seriously, the pictures I’ve seen of this sand colored Stratoliner don’t do it justice. In person it’s absolutely stunning! I shot the pictures right after I took it out of the box and turned up the brim. The size is perfect. Not too shabby!

One thing I’m wondering though is if the sweatband is correct. It says “The Open Road” on it rather than “Stratoliner”. I don’t really care - just wondering for curiosity’s sake.

Forty years from now heads will explode on the Lounge when your grandkid posts photos of it in the "Grandpa's Hat" thread. Theories will abound about a rare "Stratoliner X Open Road" version and members will bemoan the fact that Stetson didn't keep better records. Not that the grandkid would sell it, but they could list it with both keywords on eBay and double their market.

Or you can just accept it as a sort-of-cool quality control issue.

Regardless, it's a great looking hat and you wear it well!

I've seen this kind of thing with vintage drum sets made by Ludwig back in the 60's. Some of them had quirky quality control things going on that didn't affect their build quality or sound but certainly make them unique. Some collectors actually seek those drums out for their collections. I've got a set of them that are badged with logo plates from two different eras because they were using up the old badges that were left over. I just love it.

Anyway, this sweat band reminded me of that - and I think I actually like the hat better if it is indeed a quirky QC thing. The apparent quality of the hat is just terrific otherwise, so a little quirk like that just makes it more special to me.

Apart from some anxiety about pulling off the wearing of such a hat, it is one of the nicest fedoras I’ve ever held. A Dobb’s Fifteen originally purchased in Philadelphia. The felt is unbelievably soft and malleable. It feels like velvet—such a difference from my other hats. I get why you would’ve paid the extra $5 back in the day.

Keeping it for now—will see how brave I’m feeling in the fall.
