Man, there are some very fine recent acquisitions!

I was up in Eric’s neck of the woods in, Minneapolis and Saint Paul, @Short Balding Guy for a quick day and a half and looked in Heime’s Haberdashery and a little place called Wescott Station antiques.

I was impressed with some of the felts being used by Stetson and Dobbs for new production hats but off the shelf hats were still at custom hat prices there. I did find a nice Borsalino Alessandria in great shape save for a little light mothing on the upper brim, and took it home.

Antique stores and vintage clothing emporiums can be all over the map. Normally, a hat can be had at a location like this for considerably less than eBay. Dealers realize their market is smaller than eBay and price accordingly. Of course, many think they can get eBay prices in their limited foot traffic location, as well. Those hats sit there for longer.

In my experience, estate sales are the best bet. Many of my great finds were the result of estate sales.

Thank you, Jim.

Estate sales are good although I've found that most people born in the '70's or later in the U.S. never had much exposure to or use for fedora's and tend toward cowboy hats and baseball caps. My other go-to's are charity resale shops. Most items are donated so every dollar is profit and they don't tend to mark up prices. Most antique stores have to spend money to buy goods to then sell to the consumer at a profit, so their mark-up tends to be higher...and many antique dealers seem to think that every "old hat" is worth a lot of money :)

Yes, I like Goodwill. I have found a couple of bargains there.

I have been to antique stores in Wisconsin, but haven't found hats in them. Are the prices comparable to what the same hat would cost on eBay? Are there real bargains found in them sometimes?

It depends— sometimes I’ve encountered proprietors who will literally look up what a similar hat sold for on eBay before they ring me up. Other times there are great deals, and sometimes they think they have something valuable and seriously overprice a real decrepit beater.

It really comes in handy to know more than the sellers do sometimes.

Great find Jeff! This one should clean up to be a real showpiece. What is the name of the color, they are always so entertaining.

After hanging out in the lounge for the past couple of years, and observing everyone sporting these fabulous Gannon hats, and after prompting by @Tukwila to get one , and after seeing @Woodtroll’s whiskey colored fedora, I finally broke down and ordered one. Couldn’t be happier.

Such a nice hat! Everything about just looks right. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m filing this away for a future custom of my own.
