"Echt Panama" J. Pul Muntplein 5 Amsterdam, 59cm, Crown 5 inches, Brim 2 3/8 inches probably late 1950s maybe later. This hat was one of a recent 3 hat find that included a Rehfus & Cie. / Hutfabrikanten Homburg and a Echter Borsalino Homburg. I tend to think it was blocked and dressed locally. I really like the ribbon design and blocking / form.

Rick, I saw the listing & made note of the condition. I really like the color also. It is similar to Akubra's Taupe Fawn. In low lighting Taupe Fawn does turn a bit more brown than shown below. Michael R has one also. It's a great color & can be worn with most anything but gray.

I'll second that. I wear my Taupe Fawn Campdraft more often than I wear my other two Campdrafts because I like the color, and it seems to "work" with any other colors I'm wearing at the time.

After a late arrival home from a business trip today, I was thrilled to learn my new Dobbs Rosebud had been delivered! A great excuse to take off early and head home. Here it is. It's labeled 7-1/4 Long Oval, but it fits a little on the large side. I'm going to add a spacer or two and hope that it shrinks a bit.

I'm going to wear it the rest of the day!

Stefan, This one is from 1954 so still fairly early (after JHS). Tonak used better parts for American market hats and closer to JHS time wise the better (late 1940s early 1950s). I still have some really nice Tonak hats made for the domestic market (similar to this hat) into the late 1950s.

Steve, thanks. I had this down as a fifties hat, but I was unsure about the numbers on the label corresponding with the date. Good to see it confirmed. It seems the last few days several very nice Tonak examples have popped up here on the lounge.

That is truly rare find, Steve, and an excellent looking hat. Vintage straw hats of any sort from the Netherlands are a rare find. Pul was a large seller, but I have only one hat from them (a felt). I found some ephemera about them on the net though.

Thank you, Mike. This is from Delmonico Hatter, the folks who will offer Long Oval as an option. An option I took (and the label so says). "Heavy sweat action," LOL! That's me. Warmer weather is forcing out the winter, and pretty soon I'll be glad hats have sweatbands!

Stefan, Thank you! I was surprised when I first saw photos of it. I think it was probably locally blocked and dressed. There is no paper label behind the sweatband. Thank you for additional artifacts on J. Pul.

Picked this one up last week. Tonak is not usually a brand I'm too keen on because of their wildly varying quality. This one is very nice though and I was especially caught by the nice proportions. Tonak Flex in brown. Bound brim at about 7cm and crown at 9,5cm at the pinch. No liner, but I'm working on that.

Had never heard of Tonak but that's a fine looking hat. I like that the ribbon is a little bit rippled? Wavy? Gives it great character to my eye.

Thank you and welcome to the lounge. The crumples in the ribbon are caused by the hats sitting on top of eachother (sometimes for years). If they are stored properly it doesn't occur, but as you say: it does give them a bit of character. CDL school is keeping us pretty busy - I don’t have very much time for sharing hats right now. I do want to share this Mallory Twenty that I won before I left for school, though - the eBay seller shipped it to me at the school house and I’ve been wearing it most of the week.

I’m sure I couldn’t have afforded this if it were any cleaner than it is, but I think I love it even more dirtied up like this. You can tell right away how much it’s been worked in and yet the felt is in superb shape and the inside is absolutely gorgeous (minus the sweat stains, which don’t bother me at all).

The only problem here was that the wind cord came with the button sewn to the ribbon (see photos). Does anybody know if they used to come that way from the manufacturers? I only ask because the thread color used to sew the button to the ribbon exactly matched the ribbon color, which I think would be hard for a purchaser to duplicate (not impossible, obvioulsy). I just wondered if they came this way and the original owner of this Dallas just never cut the button loose.

Anyway, when I cut the button loose and did a drop test the whole wind cord came off in my hand. I reinstalled it by threading the cord through a large-gauge needle and pushing it through the hat just under the ribbon, then I tied a knot at the end of the cord on the inside of the hat and voila, one functioning wind cord just in time for tornado season here in Missouri!

I like this hat quite a lot.

Stefan, They added "Tyden / Week" to the paper label and sometimes it has the production year along with the week. I have some late 1950s examples with the week and production year.
