Well some pictures of the Buckaroo Hatters I got from Blake.
Don't know if he was the original owner.

A couple of thrift store scores. First, this Ecuador body with woven edge. Not the finest weave, but it should make a nice Western. As is now, it has a 5 1/4" crown with a 4 1/2" brim.

Next, one that I normally would have left behind, as I don't usually have much use for a woman's hat that I can't convert. But, this is a velour traveller (I presume) hat from Borsalino that looks like it will fit my little niece.

There was also a shawl collar tuxedo from Arnold Constable Fifth Avenue dated 1956, but it was a 44 short, and I am a 40 short, so I had to leave it. Oh well, nowhere to wear a tux in my little town anyway.

C.G. Wilke "Bürstel Electra", 58cm, Open Crown 6 inches, Brim 2 1/4 inches probably later 1930s. I received this fantastic gray Wilke Velour via trade with Fastuni (Armin). The Velour finish is really nice and it still has the original paper size label. It originally had a Crease Clip/Holder. I could tell by the wear on the liner label and the remnants of a very sharp center crease.

Great trade! That is a beautiful looking Wilke. It looks super soft. I like that fact it has a 6" open crown. Makes for a nice, deep crease. I like to color as well. Very rich.

Very cool hat. Great colors and velour. Also love the way it's creased (reminds me of my Optimo).

Thanks Harv. This is one of the best fitting hats I've found so far, and in like new condition. I steamed the dents in it myself, it had never been pinched. Unfortunately the sweatband is so dried out I'm probably going to have to get it replaced.

Harv, Thanks! Yes these dimensions are fairly common for that time period and place. I am a big fan of Gray German and Austrian Velours from this time period. I posted new photos after working with the Velour a bit.

Wow, looks unworn! I love seeing these transition hats, as it adds knowledge to a murky era in these brands. The Challenger was offered from the fall of 1971 through the fall of 1974, so this could be either made by HCA at their factory in Winchester, TN, or by Koracorp in Garland, TX after the end of HCA and sale of their assets. I don't have enough information on either production period to narrow it further. The price seems to be a bit later, but other details make me think it's still an HCA product. The funny thing about the Knox Challenger was its marketing: "For the man who likes a little wider brim." This was a wider brim in the early-'70s!

Nice catch and great size. Let me know if you ever want to sell it, and would you mind if I used photos of it for my website?

Thanks,

Brad
