Wow!!! That's a beauty RClark. Congrats!

And double Wow!!! That was a h#ll of a catch, Moe!!! Gotta love the $5 ones. I don't know a thing about Biltmore's, but it doesn't look too recent.

I like the thin ribbon wide brim style of the Stratoliner and was looking to find an early version without a liner. It's pushin' 100 degrees today.
Found this Portis instead. Almost a 3 inch brim , taupe color. Portis made some great hats!

Yes, the Portis is a nice one.
Thanks for the compliments on the Biltmore. I only got as far as looking up Gemco, which existed between '59 and '86. With a price of $5 and change, my guess is early 60's.

An interesting, but unfortunate, side note to the Biltmore. While the felt and ribbon seem to be of good quality, it turns out that the sweatband was made of thick paper with a leather like finish, and the liner was glued heavily to the felt. I was under the impression that Biltmore made a better product than that up until modern times, so I'm revising my guess as to it's age to the 70's. I still like the look of it, so I guess sewing in a sweatband is going to be my evening's entertainment.

Moe from looking at the pictures the sweatband looks like leather to me . Sometimes when the leather is rotten it looks like cardboard, but I can be wrong. Either way is a nice hat , it's worth to put a new sweatband.

Trevi, I have had to deal with rotten leather sweats before, and to my experience they tend to flake a lot as they disintegrate. This one seemed to be in good shape until it got moist when I went to give it a gentle stretch. I found a sweat similar to this one on a low-grade shantung Stetson from the 70's, when (according to what I've read) a lot of manufacturers were trying different cost-cutting measures to try to stay in business during a big decline in general hat wearing.
Still, it's too nice a piece of felt to not fix up to wear. I took advantage of the ruined sweat to properly reblock the hat. Hope to post fresh pics soon.

The green hat has a perforated and stitched band and triple-stitched brim. The green satin and cellophane liner is detachable and the sweatband is roan leather. It is by Rheinhut, retailed by Hut-Dessau, Mülheim-Ruhr and came with one of those curious plastic crown forms. On the ticket inside it says:

Com : 6701
Forme: 2513
Farb: Tarn
Quality: Otter (I think)
Weite: 57 (fortunately it is quite generous and can accommodate my 59cm head!)

It took well to the steaming, I think, and the felt is nice and firm. Whilst I was on holiday in Germany I took a fancy to the idea of a slightly more "sporty" hat than my Christy/TSH Swerford on rainy days and so when I got home hastened to a shop which I know carries a small but reliable selection of continental hats, and these two are the result.

The grey is by Rockel and has rather a fancy woven band, folded lengthwise with a toning floral pattern and quite a lot of taper but is otherwise exceptional only for being in my size. The fact that the pinch conforms so cleanly to a right-hand grip suggests that it has seen quite a bit more wear than the other. On the ticket it says:

Forme: 50/6-5
Farbe: 920
Qual: 03
Groß: 59

I've now added an Akubra Angler to my collection. Nice looking hat so now I just need some slightly cooler less humid weather since I'm already so hot natured..

Just received my first Akubra! I've been doing a lot more hiking and backpacking and wanted something that could take some abuse, so I picked up a Bushman. I'm pretty pleased with how the crease turned out!
