Adam

I think this Adam is from the 30s but maybe it's older!

Now here is a wonderful Dobbs Milan I just received today. I bought it for the owner of the company I work for. He's in his 60s and likes my hats. On several occasions, he's mentioned that he needs to get one. So, I had him try on one of mine. I'm 7 1/4 and I could tell it was a touch tight on him, so I fished this 7 3/8 hat out of the 'Bay. Now I'm wishing I could keep it!! We'll see if it fits him. I know he will really enjoy it.

The color is a cool grey with a beautiful silk pug. The other reason I want to keep it is because I have a 7 1/4 version in the natural colored straw with a blue pug. Same block and brim width. They're siblings!

Purple sage, both look great. The courtney is especially nice.

Artdeco, congrats! Very nice find. I like that brim binding.

AnA, beautiful Milan. I'm sure he will love it.

This arrived today, from purple sage via eBay. Arnold hatters with a nice wide ribbon and 2 7/8" raw brim. I only had enough time to open the box and put it on for a second before I had to put it away and get the family on the road for a quick overnight. But I think there's lots of potential here, possibly a small Gus crease. Thanks purple sage!

I look forward to updating with better pics this week.

Maurice L. Rothschild Bowler Hat

Hello everyone, I just purchased this bowler on eBay. It was supposedly manufactured in 1906 or thereabouts. It has a slight tear on the front of the brim and it has definitely been worn more than a few times, but it is a definite keeper. After despairing of ever finding a vintage bowler in size 7 5/8 (and I've been looking for A WHOLE MONTH!!! :D) I bought a inexpensive wool Scala bowler online, and, of course, found this beauty online the next week. Oh well, you can never have too many hats.

Congratulations, and welcome to the Derby Club! Findng a 7 5/8 is really lucky! The Union label is post-1934, so it's a bit younger than 1906. It probably dates from 1934 to sometime in the 1940s.

Thanks Brad, you are quick! I was posting this under the Bowler hat section when I thought to check out your website for ideas for verifying the age on my hat. I got the idea for checking out the union label from your "how to date a Dobbs hat" section and after a little research found that "The United Hatters, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union (UHCMW) was formed in 1934 by the merger of the United Hatters of North America and the Cloth Hat, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union, settling deep rifts between the competing unions." From there I checked out newspaperarchive.com to research Rothschild hats and figured out an approximate date about the same as yours. I was just coming back here to edit my original post and saw your response.

Any suggestions for repairing the damage to the brim, and is stretching a bad idea for a bowler?

Thanks again!

Ah , You remember !

Hey Frank, you've been polishing your sniper scope! That one is not a Homburg ;)

Glad to see, you finally found yourself a Derby. Congratulations :)

I see that you remember my last purchase and how I got a homburg not a derby, btw I do like my "burg/derby" but as you state I finally found one !
Thanks for noticing.

Carl Zeumer Magazin Zum PFAU, Pfau-Hut, size 58cm, 156 grams, probably 1920s. It could be a Fur - Wool blend. It wears very soft + light and is in very good condition. Not sure what company made it for Carl Zeumer Magazin Zum PFAU.

Lo and Behold, this Knapp-Felt De Luxe Derby showed up as a BIN for $80, so I jumped at it. It clearly shows that after the shop at 244 Fifth Avenue opened, the Dobbs crest had not yet morphed into the standard crest with the border outline and the different typeface. It is basically a reworking of the original crest updating the street number.

Until the 244 lone address shows up, we'll have to figure that the crest didn't change until after the addition of 620 Fifth Avenue in 1917:

It has a top hat band on it instead of a Derby ribbon. It's not tacked down, but fits well. I can't tell if there was ever a previous ribbon, or if this is original for some unknown reason.

Vellum Finish, as on my 1906-1909 Knapp-Felt De Luxe.

The Duplicate number is now on the same factory label as the block and size.

Collins & Fairbanks Co.

Not sure of the age of this Collins & Fairbanks, maybe someone here can help me with that. Aside from some popped stitching on the sweatband and the liner being a bit loose the hat is in very nice condition. I believe this is the original box which obviously has seen better days. It has a 2" snap down brim with grosgrain binding. The crown is approx 5 1/2" (open) which is wrapped in a 2" grosgrain ribbon. The trailing edges of the ribbon bow are unhemmed and frayed which was fairly common on hats made thru the 30s. The sweatband is unreeded with a taped back seam.
