Mothers day special. I found this Adam panama in an antique store for $20 and went nuts except it wouldn't fit me, so my wife ends up with it. Happy Mothers day you deserve it!

Navy Blue Stetson Special Soft Homburg

Navy blue Stetson Special soft homburg. The hat's in great shape less a little soiling in the liner. It has a 2" curled brim with grosgrain edge. The open crown is approx. 5 1/2" with a 2" grosgrain ribbon. The size tag has turned a shade of patina. I was finally able to find a lot number on the back of the sweatbands. I enhanced it a bit to try to read it> Looks like "7503" to me. Alan would probably know! I'm thinking the 30s on this one.

Ribbon is very wide but it is brown. The quality of the straw is amazing.

So Alan I finally found a Lot Number on a Stetson sweatband, which I believe is "7504" Not positive though since it is very difficult to read the numbers. As many Stetsons that I own I would have though I would have found a few more by now on the older ones. What would be the significance of that particular lot number?

Here's my new hats! I received them from my great grandfather. Most of them were bought back then in Glens Falls NY, my home town. I don't know the brands of any of them accept a Dobbs hat that is too small for me. Figure you guys could help me out? Here's pics of them. I think hat 2 is a Stetson.

Nice tiny collection, there! The 2nd hat is a Stephen L. Stetson and this was a different maker than the giant John B. Stetson.

7503 looks to be a good read on this stamp. There appears to be a chronological sequence to these numbers - you can find your Special's place on the timeline on Stetson Sweat Stamps thread. I know that my Stetson Special is posted there with a 76XX number... there may be others. My guess would be late 1930s on these hats. 77XX-78XX seem to hit around 1940. The mark disappears shortly after. A sweatband that does not show a trace of the LOTXXXX stamp would indicate a hat that is later than the early 1940s, or a hat that has had its sweatband replaced at a later time. I have yet to purchase a pre-WWII Stetson with its original sweatband intact that does not show the LOTXXXX stamp.

There is at least one example (posted by RLK) of an early Stetson with a high four digit number that suggests the sequence might have restarted at some point around or prior to 1920.

Knox Continental

Grey Knox "Continental" with 2 1/2" brim with 1/4" copper color grosgrain edging; 5 5/8" crown depth with 1 5/8" deep burgundy grosgrain ribbon. Short of some light stains or watermarks on the liner, the hat is is excellent condition. The felt is very lightweight and malleable. The hat was in an open crown shows no indication it has ever been worn. The original owner's initials "RJC" are stamped on the sweatband.
