I picked up his Dobbs Twenty knowing it had no liner and a rough sweatband, but the felt looked good, the measurements were right, and the cavanagh edge spoke of style. My first surprise--the seller sent it parcel post. Ok, so there was no additional shipping charge, and I didn't clarify how it would be shipped, so that's on me. My next surprise: the way it arrived:

I winced, hoping that the box took the brunt of the damage.

There is really no excuse for sending a hat through parcel post without adequate packing. Go back a few pages, scroll down to the bottom of the page, there you will see my new Stetson. It crossed a continent, then an ocean and finally arrived to be sorted in the UK, all by parcel post. The difference between your hat on arrival and mine couldn't be more so.

OK, Stetson boxes are made for purpose, but surely common sense tells someone that unless you pack something as crushable as a hat really well, it will end up looking like the forklift has run over it. When I saw it, I didn't know whether to weep, or switch off for a minutes silence.
For future reference Loungers, if you have to send a hat via parcel post, one of the best crushproof packing inserts to use is screwed up newspaper. Always pack the box as tight as possible.

A little more John Wayne indeed. That one is spot on. Looks great TPD166.

Bummer Lotsahats. Looks like nothing throwing a little more money at can't fix though.:(

That's a nice one 1mach1. Those colors look good together.

First of all, thanks Aaron for a very respectful post. I never check this thread, but I felt certain the hat I sent you would end up here, and here it is :)

As I mentioned to you last night, there is no need to have this hat re-blocked - call me at the number I gave you last night, and I will walk you through steaming it.

GHT - I have bought and sold more hats than I can count, so you can step down from your podium. If the hat is too large for a standard priority box, I ship parcel post. It saves money and my boxes are every bit as resilient as the ones supplied by the post office. The hat was packed safely - exactly the way I have packed and shipped countless felt hats in the past.

Felt is resilient. No, I don't like to see a box crushed, but yes, I do count on the recipient being able to steam out disfigured felt on the rare occasions when something like this happens.

As a buyer, I expect to sometimes receive crushed hats. If there was ever actual damage (torn sweatbands or holes in felt) then I would be upset. That has NEVER happened to me as a buyer OR as a seller - not even once.

To all the new hat resellers who have joined us over the last three years while I've been gone - don't worry, I am still "gone". If I do sell hats in the future, it will be extremely sporadic.

I might add - I miss you guys, and I miss receiving great hats in the mail, and sending them out. We are finally leaving my studio condo for a huge house, so maybe I'll start collecting again.

Well that's put me, well and truly in my place. Scott, respect to you for admitting that you sent the hat, packaged that way. It's difficult to express, without causing you more annoyance with me, but honestly, would you not be upset to receive a hat in that condition? I have read, and re-read my previous post, what is there to say?

If you are a trader, and from your comment:

I assume that you are, what will the photos of that carton do for your sales?

Like I said, whatever I say will cause you grief, so best say nothing except: If you would be happy to receive goods in such a condition, then there really is nothing else to say.

GHT, I'm thinking you didn't read my post, or you created a straw man to argue with. I have addressed every single point in your post above. Still, yes - I do care what potential customers think of me, and I have literally thousands who are definitely not thinking like you do. And that's fine.

No, you haven't caused me grief - you have caused yourself grief. I admitted that I sold the hat, because I did nothing wrong - the post office smashed a box that 99 times out of 100 arrives safely. I cannot accompany the hat all the way to the end customer.

Also (again, repeating myself), no - I would not be happy to receive a crushed hat. You put those words in the mouth of your straw man, so I'll leave this thread and allow you to continue your conversation with your own imagination.

To the folks who know me - where the heck did this guy come from? Is this how this forum has evolved in the last three years?

ScottF thanks for the warning!!! I would not accept a hat in that condition or the box! The postal boxes are far superior to that soft cardboard you shipped that hat in!! How many times has that box been around the block?? May I dare say at least 5 by the looks of it it's was worn out before you put the hat in it! You blew it when you knew it would end up in this forum!! No sympathy for you and I am not a surrogate of the complaintant.

Gentlemen: I, for one, would hate to see this thread get locked down because of a disagreement over a marginally-related topic. +1 - not least as the parties, who are directly involved, don't have a problem over this issue

Just Came in today!

Well the Postman made me happy today these just came in todays post.

The black shorty was the only color that I was missing in my summer shorty hat collection so now I have one for every color suit :D

Not bad for $19.00 w/ shipping included !

Also arriving today was this straw boater that was $35.00 also w/ shipping included .
Only drawback to this one was that the original owner was a smoker and it reeks like cigarette smoke ,I am wonder if anyone can recommend a treatment to get rid of the smell or do you think it was subside over time ?

All the Best ,Fashion Frank
