Thanks for the kind words folks. Just for clarification, this is not the Polish hat, but a recreased Faustmann.

The Dane: Brim width is 50 to 55mm. Larger brims on my small head look like sombreros ;)

When I first began wearing fedoras several years back, I didn't like tall crowns and wide brims. Now I love tall crowns and wide brims. My head is exceptionally narrow - so narrow, in fact, that I sometimes get my eyeglasses from the children's section. And I'm only 5' 6" tall, with a thin build. I'll admit it took some getting accustomed to. Now I'm to the point where if it isn't a tall crown, thin ribbon, and wide brim, the hat seems small to me.

Ooh, how I would love to meet you in person, just to call you "shorty" with my towering 5' 7" :D. I travel to China a lot and love it there due to my average/above average height.

On a serious note, I know what you mean. Up until now I have only ever worn stingy brims, but am slowly but surely increasing the brim size. I'm not yet convinced about crown height (my wife says I look like a Texas Ranger in my Borsa), and after my new Faustmann, which I had recreased partly to reduce the crown height, I have been thinking about getting the same done for the Borsa. Maybe I should wait after all.

The Scimitar

One of my hats just never really sent me (as seen here) . Just couldn't get into the matchy match ribbon. So I had the Jessen and his wonderful staff of Boston's Salmagundi rework the ribbon for me. I think they did an excellent job.

Cast from his tribe by Old Shadow the elder due to his mixed blood, Scimitar faces the desert sands alone. Striding towards the red sky of sunset and into an uncertain future.

My latest project – another double-teardrop western for my son’s 9th birthday. After he saw the Roy Rogers video he wanted one and I made him one from a Stetson silverbelly earlier this year – it came out pretty well. I came across an older black Resistol with a tall crown recently and thought I would give it another try. So I re-watched the RR video last night and decided to get it soaking wet like Roy by using the shower. That turned out to be a good idea since the black dye exploded when the water hit it! It turned into a soggy, running black mess, but I went ahead with the shaping of the crown, got it pretty close and left it to dry. Then I spent an hour trying to get the dye off my hands. Tonight I finished shaping the crown with steam, worked on the brim, and added a new band.

Here is the before shot:

And the final product:

Nice work! I wish I could do something like that.
My first Stetson (a 4x beaver western) also bleed black dye after getting soaked with the rain in the UK, almost couldn't touch the crown without getting it on my hands.

Love the pin Brother Noble. What Unit are you in? I have been to the Maple Sugar Bowl since 1997

Thanks - it came out better than I expected. I knew about the black Stetsons doing that but had not heard about Resistols running when wet - I'll make sure my son keeps it dry!

I have had a black dobbs and a scala hat and both would shed dye if wet. I wonder if it just a trait of black hats in general?
OUTSTANDING job on the RR crease by the way

dh66, there is a lot of talk around these parts that some modern production hats bleed dye when they get wet no matter what color they are. I won't mention the name of a certain company with a lot of brands under its one roof; many of us have read and contributed comments on the threads about this. A lot of what runs off is the powder the manufacturer uses to even out the color in the dyed felt.

Steve--congrats on the acquisition of that rare beauty.

I already posted these pics in another thread but here's my contribution to the post new hats here thread.

This is my newly acquired 7X Bradford Westerner fedora, 1950's vintage? I'm becoming quite a fan of Pre-Resistol Bradfords. This is my second one and I would put them up against their Stetson equivalents anytime!

Dang it! Left a political yard sign in the background! Crap!

That's a good looking Bradford TJones. Did it begin its life as a western. I think I am going to start trolling the bay for an old silverbelly myself to repurpose. I'm pretty inspired by TPD's Roy Rogers crease. I love western with the older style crowns, there used to be so much more variety. About all I ever see around here are cattlemans, or the thrashed out Toby Keith style straw (lots of these actually, I guess 'cuz they go so well with flip-flops and t-shirts).

Yup, it was a Western when it started out but not stiff at all like the ones today. This hat is maybe late 1940's, early 1950's?...It looks nearly new for a hat that is 60+ years old....There's plenty of Silverbelly Stetsons and Resistols to be found out there. If you can find a Western with a nice straight sided crown they can make excellent fedora conversions and they'd be fairly rugged because of the heavier felt.
