Sorry to have been absent. I have been pretty busy learning how to make hats. I have gotten the fedora bug so bad that I have taken it to the next level. Nice to see you guys again....Dennis

It's great to hear from you again! Your hats look wonderful too. Thanks for the update. And welcome back!

Thanks guys.
Egghead: Good question. Yes, the pins left marks, but I have a brim cutter which is required to have the brim even all around. So, the pins were positioned on the extreme end because I knew I would be cutting that part off. The hat is 3 1/2 inches all around.

Great to see you posting again, Dennis! Surmised that you were busy with your work, and when your work is also your passion it does not get any better. Your beautiful hats are a testament to that!

I picked this up yesterday at the local downtown antique fair. The hat band says Royal Stetson, but there is no liner, so I don't know what style it is. It needs a little love but it's in pretty good shape and cost only 10 dollars. And it fits my head perfectly! Under the hat band is a tag with the numbers -9- TF089740 7 3/8 R.

This is the best I can get right now, until I get a longer arm, or the wife to snap me...:eeek:

Note: the hat is gray, but the combo of flash and green walls gives it an odd tint.

SHUFFLED off to...
My $28.00 Whippet! It's in great shape, except for the ribbon. But I like it the way it is, it has character. It was 7 3/8's (unknown when bought) and it took a stretch up for me. I can now see why all the hub-bub!

The 3x I bought off Etsy on Friday arrived today. I said I'd share more pics when it got here, so here it is.

It came smooshed into a too small box stuffed with brown paper , but I brushed it, whiped it down with a damp cloth, steamed and blocked it, and it came out not bad if I do say so myself. I wasn't expecting the mode edge. I'm quite pleased.

This one is the most accurate representation of the color.

and here's the lining

Oh yeah, here's the etsy pic again for the "before" reference

Funny how when I'm blocking a hat the hat seems to tell me the shape it wants to be. I thought the 40s Royal stetson would be a teardrop, because I like teardrops usually, but that one told me it clearly wanted to be a diamond. I thought this one would be a diamond because it was already bashed that way and bashed hard, but under the steam it told me it wanted to be a teardrop. This one is not quite as tall in the crown as the Royal (which is too bad, I like that tall crown), but it still has a nice vintage no-taper look.

Matt, your Stetson 3X looks a lot like my Stetson 15

Mine has the OPS tag so I know it was made in the early 50's. Mine is marked as Mode Edge, rather than the Selv Edge on yours. I think I read that Selv Edge is earlier than Mode, but someone more knowledgeable might be able to jump in on that.

Good find!

Got a haul today...

First up is what was billed as a 40's Stratoliner. Dunno experts can weight in. No liner, but very few moth nibbles and a bit of wear where the front crease was. It'll be a daily wear lid.

Then there's a CHAMP Featherweight. This one made me mad. Bought it in the original box, but during shipping USPS destroyed it, smashed the hat and reboxed it.

And last, but not least a Stetson Royal DeLux. A very, very nice hat.

I don't know anything about the time period they used the different names, but was under the impression that Mode and self were pretty much different names for the same edge treatment is that correct?
