Very cool, Neo! I love that raw kettle curl-- hard to find unless you have it custom made, but I've never seen/heard of this model of Stetson in the first place. nice find!

Well, both new hats that I couldn't resist this week arrived much sooner than expected... got in some big trouble for these-- you guys can advise me on whether it was worth it (gulp)!

Dobbs lightweight grey derby, presumably 1960s, since the construction, sweat and liner are almost identical to my black one.

and a dark tobacco-ish brown Belamey homburg from who knows when??

It's possible that I may like this one more than my similar Stetson St. Regis... but still undecided on the matter. The Stetson is a lighter brown with lighter trim, and has a brim width of 3 inches, pre-roll, while the Belamey's brim is 2 3/4".

St. Regis (for comparison):

Not what I expected! Stetson Whippet, in a different sort.

I got notice on Friday when returning home that a package requiring my signature was waiting for me at the Post Office. Oh my, what a pain in the seat. It is never convenient to get to the local USPS. I was totally Intrigued as the notice said that it was from Australia. Cheers mate, as I knew it was my older Stetson Whippet that I had purchased. Yahoo a light colored brown Whippet!

Boy howdy, was I shocked and miffed as I picked up my bubble envelope with a ton of Australian stamps cancelled on it. A flat envelope! Panicked I stopped the queue behind me as I asked the desk agent to allow me to open the envelope in her presence. Precisely what horrors I imagined started to come out of the envelope- the hat was flat as a sheet of paper, even folded in half. Additionally I was shocked as the hat was a miniature - certainly labeled a Stetson Whippet. I checked the label - yes a whippet. But a stingy brim, miniature hat. This was not what I was expecting. To that moment I did not know that a stingy model existed. Iwas looking at an abused new version of a Whippet! Truly disappointed I folded the hat back into the envelope. The desk agent said she liked my "fishing hat." Fishing hat.... oh man, this was supposed to be a prized Whippet! Fishing hat indeed! The poor vintage hat flew 1/2 way around the world and suffered this tragic error in shipping judgment. I was chagrined at the sender, as they treated this Whippet with disrespect and without costumer centric thinking. Off home I went.

Here is a poor pic of the opening of the hat. I tried to prop it open the best I could;

I let it be on my desk as I was busy. Busy, but also not ready to tackle this mess until today. Liner got a bath and wash. Then I brushed the devil out of the hat. The dog hair and dust came out of the hat. (I imagined that in Australia some poor dog is without it's favorite sleeping hat! The dust, perhaps from the adventures the dog took part in before its needed sleeping time with the fav hat. Sheesh.) Out came the steamer;

Steamed again and again. The wrinkles and creases started to come out. Miracles were happening as far as I knew. I could not imagine that the hat would recover and look good. Man it started to look good. I set it on a hat block to work out the leather shape after I conditioned it. The stingy brim fit me. Fit well! The dimensions were good. The hat was better than good - just GRAND! Tasty stingy brim after all!

Brown Stetson Whippet. Stingy in all dimensions. Stetson retained some of the features that my eyes expect with the larger Whippet fedora. Bound edges -same. Liner sparkling clean. Leather band was conditioned and has fared vintage new through the process. Vintage, but must have been gingerly worn and taken care of. (Perhaps that imagined dog was a better companion that I thought.) The larger brimed Whippet is a hat that I have learned to enjoy. When I see myself in a mirror or a reflection in a window I see me, not me and a hat. This change, seeing me, not me wearing a hat, prompted by the suggestion of a frequent Fedora Forum member, has taken some months to do. The smaller Whippet will need some getting used to. A couple of months of wearing and I shall see what developes.

Here is my proudly recovered and finally finished Stingy Stetson Whippet;

I have provided a comparison shots of the stingy with a larger brimmed cousin. Check out the big cousin with its smaller "mate;"

Please accept my apologies for quality of the pics. I am still working out lighting fedora shots. The shadows are unique, but not what I wanted.

Thanks for taking a look at my fav stingy brim hat! G'd day mate, Eric -

Wow, great hat. And it's a 7 1/2. Let me know if you decide you can't stand the color
and it needs a new home! We can probably work out a trade. But before you decide it's
not you, don't forget you can try different "bashes" (as jtl did with his).

Probably you just need a turquoise string tie to go with it...

Great story, SBG... but even the pictures are a little stingy. Can we zoom them up a bit?

Thanks for allowing me to share Alan. It was your suggestion to get some mirror time that I referenced. Thanks.

Alan, I am struggling with how to un-stingy the pics. I am using Smug Mug as a host site and using the FL tool and can not se how to make them bigger. Suggestions?

You where coping the top link on the shared page instead of a larger image. The top link was a thumbnail version I would suggest the Large which the first two images in this post or the XL version which are the next three. Images a little blurry camera was having trouble focusing.
