It's not a bowler, it's a fedora. I don't know about NOS, as a crown can be popped back open. You haven't seen the inside of the hat yet, so it's a bit premature to even say that it's in good condition, much less NOS.
At this point, you're not really after advice. If you're the buyer, you've just got questions that will be answered when you open the box. Be sure to post some pictures.
I love the ribbon though. It looks very much like the Barbisio that one of the members here had refurbished by Optimo. I linked the thread to the Optimo Mobsters thread if you're curious. :)

Interesting. There's a research project and opportunity at fame. Whoever takes it on could be the Lounge authority on Self-Conforming the way that Brad is the go-to-Lounger for the self-felted edge.

I don't think the patent gets you anywhere. That's just the sweat band "technology" and similar methods can be trademarked (like the aquashed, cravenette, etc. technology). The name/symbol is what's trademarked. Unfortunately, whereas patent searches have been made easy by Google, trademark searches are no fun at all.

Here's the patent. Surprisingly enough, it's not for the sweatband, but for the construction of a flexible portion of the straw hat body itself.

So, this is much different than Resistol's trademark for their Self-Conforming sweatbands, which dates to 1934.

Since Stetson didn't trademark the term, they probably had to stop using it after 1943, when Resistol applied for the trademark. Of course, boater sales were probably pretty stagnant by then, anyway.lol

A few of my nicer hats

Top hat is from Christy's of London Made Exclusively for G.E. More of Buffalo NY
Russian leather inside. Much of the glue from the top of the inside of the hat had fallen off due to the age. Also there is a thread comming loose which holds the leather liner in. Im slowly looking for a good tailor around my area to repair it. The other hat I just think looks nice but needs some cleaning after it got a few drops of rain.

Two hats showed up for me yesterday. I don't have a digital camera, so I'll just go with links.

The first one, a Dobbs Golden Coach purchased from a member of this very forum. It's absolutely lovely. I may well be bringing this one on my trip to Europe in a few weeks.

The second is a brown, plain tweed newsboy by Hanna (like the one on this page, but brown) that I'm sure will be coming on that trip.

This hat arrived today from Australia. It's my new silverbelly Campdraft. I like it already even though it's stiff as a board. I asked Ron at Hatsdirect to style it for me to a teardrop. Diamonds are easy to do, but I seem to have a hard time getting a teardrop to look the way I want it to. I can tell, this will be one of my favorites.

Thanks, Russ, CJ and IC. This one took 13 days to get here from Hatsdirect. Some have said they got theirs in less than a week.
