Thats right! That is a great hat. I feel guilty that you didn't get the thrill of finding it in your mall. At least its in your hands and on your head now.

I just discovered these two fedoras in my moms garage, they were my grandfathers who passed away almost fifteen years ago. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the year and style of the hats. They seem to be in amazing condition almost never worn, which makes sense because he was a very meticulous man. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Your grandfather had good taste. The Cavanagh is mid-'50s or later, while the Dobbs is '60s. They are both snap-brim fedoras.

Just delivered was this Dobbs, "Roundup". Bought cause I thought it looked like a fun hat! Really nice shape with the exception of an almost inperceptible very thin line of something that I think will clean off on the underside of the brim. Nice rich, soft felt, nice color too. I am not fond of the unbashed crown so I thought a modification wouldn't hurt.
Whats your input? I think i dropped the crown down 2 feet with room to spare!
Please chime in with a shape you might suggest. Not fond of the pencil rolled brim either, but that takes some work to get down. Crown first.

The pencil rolled brim is by far the best part of the hat. If you're going for a low crown look, change the crown to a bit more porkpie a bit less fedora and drop it down another inch or two, change the ribbon out for something in the 1" range and you'd have a dead ringer for a c. 1890-1930 western. Otherwise, a deep center crease with side pinches or some variation on the tom mix/tom horn is usually pretty good looking on that style hat.

And in the end, if a pencil curled, tall crowned western isn't what you're after, flip it (good pictures and listing and you'll probably turn a profit) and use the money to get exactly what you do want.

Dinerman, your westerns in general have been a MAJOR influence on my taste in westerns. You seem to have an truckload of beatiful westerns with pencil rolls. I'm quite envious of your collection.

Hey Buler, I love the front center and the front right hat from your haul. Exactly the look I try and achieve with my hats. Unfortunately, I don't seem to wear them as well as you do, but I give it my best. BTW, that Pacesetter is a beauty as well.
