Tropp The Hatter

Good condition, correct size, decent price ($35.00) local antique mall find. Gray, size 7 1/4, Cav edge but not sure of the source. Couldn't find anything on Tropp The Hatter. The area is really run down today so probably didn't survive the 1960s.

If anything is able to steer a long time Stetson fan away from the brand, this is it. Today I received a box from Brighton, TN and the contents are stunning. It looks something like a cross between an Akubra outback hat and a Stetson Open road but in a beautiful medium gray color. The hat is rabbit fur, 3" brim bound in gray grosgrain, 5" crown with a C crease and pinches, leather reeded sweat band and a hat band that is a perfect match for it. It is black leather with gray embroidery. Thank you Mr. Moore. The man can certainly make a hat!

Thanks, guys. I'm definitely pleased about my first custom hat. And, Monbla, this one might even make the grade in beautiful downtown Dallas.

This one hurts. I really wanted this to work for me with summer coming up. It is a 7 1/4 and I was hoping it would fit -- but no dice. I don't think this hat has ever been worn.

I'm putting it up in the classifieds for trade offers before I send it to the bay.

Buler, I'm surprised to note that's your first. I was thinking it wasn't but then I might have been thinking of ScottF. Nice one! Where do you wear it?

I'd wear it on my head if it fit. ;) Don't remember anyone wearing one of these, maybe Dinerman or Douglas? This one is in such good shape and the green on the ribbon really pops with the black felt. I think it would look good with my carhartt brown jacket....

Wow -- that's the Milan equivalent of a "self-felt ribbon". Never seen that before. Very cool.

Great hat Steve, looks a lot like an Adam De Luxe I have.

The sweatband seam looks similar to the way this Adam "The Digby" bowler has it's done.

Great No.1, Bill!! That ribbon treatment is really cool. Are you going to keep the telescope crown?

Thanks Josh. I popped it out and steamed the crease line away. Its a nice 6" open crown right now. Although, if it fit me I'd try it with the tele.

Tropp The Hatter (Cont.)

Josh & Billy, Thanks! It does have Adam look to it. The sweat is also stitched to the hat from the outside which isn't typical.

I did some searching and found that this operation goes back to at least 1891. The original owner / hatter was a man named Morris Tropp (originally from Galicia / Austria / Poland) who was originally at another address and pops up at the one on the hat in the 1920 census (listed as Hatter). He is no longer around as of the 1930 census but his wife is listed as running the shop. It must have kept going because my hat appears to be from the 1950s.

Original location from the 1891 Philadelphia City directory. His brother? Wolf is also listed. I found Wolf had a hat shop at 77 Livingston St. Newark, NJ (1891 Newark City Directory).

That's interesting info you've found! Mostly because I live in Philadelphia and haven't known that neighborhood to ever be anything other than "Little Puerto Rico". You can go up there and see pigs and chickens running around in backyards and empty lots.
Next time I go to Freddy and Tony's Restaurant to pick up some empanadas I'll tell 'em one of my people, a Polish hatter, used to live down the street!

Nice hat! Great find.

Actually when these people arrived (1890) the place they came from (now Poland - eastern Ukraine) was part of Austria. Looking at the 1910/20/30 census data from that area in Philadelphia a good number of the people were from central and eastern Europe.

Almost like -new. Fairly shaggy velour, a little softer and nicer than the early C & K but not quite up to Austrian finish quality. Big hand filled-in factory paper label but a liner stitch runs through the middle.
