The size label that the seller said wasn’t there is there, and it’s a lot smaller than the measurements I was given. Bummer...great old hat.
Makes you wonder if some sellers actually look for a label at all! Nice hat though, Brent.

Barbisio Titan, size 59 or 7 3/8 US
umbria-barbisio-9-jpg.289922

The felt is the color "Umbria" region of Central Italy, this is one of the most beautiful colors among those that Barbisio has put into production over the years. It comes from the historic factory in Sagliano Micca.
umbria-barbisio-3-jpg.289923

Like his brother it has been used for years as a display in a Biella clothing store. It has a single small defect: the yellow cellulose protective cap has shattered, it is in excellent condition.

The felt is of medium texture, slightly thicker than its sibling in green. The hat has a classic Italian shape between the fifties and sixties with a simple and elegant line, at Barbisio they have been masters in simplifying the designs and making them fantastic in production with very accurate workmanship and finishes.
umbria-barbisio-6-jpg.289925

The measures are the following: the raw ones are at 6.5 cm., the crown at 11 cm. and the ribbon is about three centimeters.

I have had other hats in this color that have gone all over the world, this is the first in my size, fits perfectly, which remains in the collection :)
Again: beautiful hat by Barbisio at the top of their game, Daniele.

Here’s one that was closer to my size. It was a long distance Craigslist find and the seller was willing to ship. It turned out to be a 7 1/2 rather than the 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 I was hoping for so it’s also on the block.

Dobbs Westward. 2 3/4” bound brim and 5 5/8” open crown.

The felt is so nice on this hat that it’s a temptation to size it up, but I’d rather it go to someone that will fit it unaltered.
Again one that didn't pan out. Pity; such a fine looking hat. You're due a streak of luck again, Brent!

Some hats that came in this week.
Haven't seen one like this before and the size was uncertain. Took a chance on it and it worked out.
Wegener Carrera in Biber quality, colour is called Kastell. Zize 56 with the overwelt brim with a double row of stitches at 6cm and crown at 10cm at the front. Likely some beaver content to the felt because of the quality name and a very nice hand to it at least.
Paul Orlob of Düsseldorf came from a line of furriers, of which there were traditionally quite a few in that city.

This is a picture of Gunther Orlob, Pauls Father I believe, and an associate.

Second one to come in was this one.
Panizza is the least consistent in its quality of the Italian makers. If they got it right, they were fabulous, but sometimes it just isn't there. This one they got right.
Panizza in the colour Lampo (lightning). Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10,5 cm at the center dent. Weighs 105 grams with the felt being thin and dense. Lovely hand to the felt, almost like a chamois but not quite. The brim binding ribbon is extremely narrow with just about 2mm showing on the top and on the bottom.
Kreymborg was a menswear retail chain. It disappeared in 2000 after being around since 1891.

One hat of a two hat deal. I didn't expect all that much of this one as I made the deal for the other one. I was wrong.
Scott&Co (liner) or Scotts (sweatband) Bruton beaver blend in St James blue. Size 57 with the overwelt (?) brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10,5 at the center dent. It is not as common for European hats to advertise beaver fur as a felt feature. This one does, so uncommon for that alone. The felt has that moldability you'd expect from a beaver felt, without it being stiff. So an excellent felt with a great hand as well. The very narrow overwelt brim is done to a high standard with some sort of blind stitch to finish it off.
I don't see Scott&Co all that often and the other one I had was a nice enough hat, but not of this quality.

Borsalino Augusta longhair in Sepia. Size 56 with the overwelt brim at 6cm and the crown 11cm at the center dent. The colour is a rich and deep brown colour which is really attractive.

Berteil 1.jpg

Sometimes you have to be bold to have something special.
Berteil 2.jpg

In this case, two bowler hats sold in Paris by a "brocante" who photographed them well, but the size was completely wrong.
Berteil 3.jpg

Berteil size 7 1/8 or 58cm in Europe. The internal measure is 20x16 cm.
Berteil 4.jpg

The exterior is in very good condition, as is the interior except for the unstitching of the front of the sweatband.

Berteil particolare 1.jpg
Surprisingly there are no drafts or dents in the crown. The toppings are good and still presentable.
Berteil 5.jpg

It is rare to find a bowler hat of this age so well preserved
