as far as knocking, I’m not sure it’s the most welcoming area to be knocking. I’ll certainly drive by and see what’s what if you’d like. I’m interested in seeing it anyway.

This entailed putting together a history of an address/property as far back as you could go, the objective being to see if any nasty activity may have occurred on-site in the past (storage tanks, chemicals, dumping, etc.). There is a lot to be gleaned from those sources and I think I could actually date the life of the factory that way.

4 1/4 Pork Pieish crown as shaped - 5 1/2 open
1 3/4 cobalt grayish blue grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with tight underwelt

For Election Day I am debuting my very first Portis. The OPS tag points to an early 1950s (1951 to 1953) dating. Prior to today I had only seen it in poor lighting and didn’t realize the blue tones in the felt and ribbon. Had assumed it to be silver with black ribbon.. but it turns out it’s more of a steel blue with a cobalt blue/dark grey ribbon. A beautiful combination. The original owner had left a piece of point board type material inside... I assume he used for forming the pork pie shape in the crown. I’m not soled on the crown shape but it will stay for now. The Swans Down finish is super soft and smooth. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Portis hats and this one for me supports those thoughts. If I remember correctly this one came off a tip from @BobHufford Thanks Bob!!

It arrived in this super cool Lee Pan Am box. Would have loved to have found that hat too!

replacing the stitching was fairly easy. I fretted over it for a few weeks and then just had at it. Went fine.

Sure. There are several companies that did directories. Ours are Polk. They at least were in the reference section and usually at least go to 1900 or before. Most Sanborn maps have been digitized. There are some Sanborns on line with the Library of Congress, even Yonkers. But they seem to bookend the factory's existence.

Knox Twenty. I love the felt, and it is greener than the pictures show. It is thin and soft, without being floppy. I like Knox 20 felt better than 40. If you put your finger on it it holds it place. It came with a 1946 receipt
