Built myself this full custom.
Well. Sort of.
This was a 50s Adam Pork pie with a narrow over-welt brim. re-blocked, flanged the brim.
I took out the stitching and flattened the welt giving it a 1/4” more brim, then stitched on some vintage binding.
This sweatband is one of 10 ordered from Brian Sullivan, who has taken over
J W hats.
I had an epiphany and gave the leather sweat’s edge unique appeal by stitching gold thread in 3 rows. Think it may end up being one of the features that may help my customs stand out from others. One row of stitching on dress felts, so it won’t look western.
Probably, somebody has already done this stitching on their sweats, but I haven’t seen one.
I’ve yet to come up with a logo, but Brian says he can emboss one in gold into the leather.
Also figured out that holes need to be pre punched in the sweat’s rear seam so the stitching ends up looking more uniform. Kinda drunk lookin’ on this one.
Could’ve easily sewed on a grosgrain ribbon and bow, but I think this particular multi colored hat band that was salvaged off a huge 90s black Resistol looks pretty good on this little homemade hat.
I needed a lid that was a little...different.

Side note, I'm in constant admiration or your Merle Haggard drawing. Truly a work of art.

I so agree and can attest to the fact that Randall @Randall Renshaw is a true artist. I'm lucky enough to own an RR original.

Several times I’ve thought about removing a welted edge to add more brim width. The whole thing came out very nice. The stitching on the sweat will certainly set your work apart too.

Several times I’ve thought about removing a welted edge to add more brim width. The whole thing came out very nice. The stitching on the sweat will certainly set your work apart too.

Thanks, Brent. I’m glad you like the stitching idea. And...glad to find out that, so far, it’s a unique idea.
I was afraid at least ten people would reply that they’ve seen hundreds of sweats done this way.
In an email a good friend, who wishes me to do well with custom hats, commented that some may perceive that the stitching might irritate the forehead. However, foreheads slope back and never touch the top portion of a 2” wide leather sweatband...unless you’re Frankenstein.
Maybe I’ll broach this concern in future advertising.

Gonna have to take the risk of being considered a thread hog, because I don’t know if there’s a Crofut and Knapp thread, so I’ll just have to post these here. Hard to wait to, since these two new hats are sweet! With hat boxes!

A back bow that I’m going to keep!

All others I’ve seen were WARs on pork pies, but this one is 1 3/4” and looks pretty good to me. Always thought they looked effeminate, but this Knapp is just too nice to mess around with. Even left the brim in saucer mode. The wide binding on bottom and more narrow on top dictates that this should be an up brim, but I have to fight an urge to snap this 2 7/8” brim down, which it does so well!
The brown one has a 2 3/4 brim and “Guild Edge” Embossed on the sweat that matches a Dobbs stamping.
