The felt is very light and wonderfully soft to the touch, almost of a velour-like quality. This finish is called Antilope. Scored for 4.16 €.

Antilope is a very nice finish and common among German hat makers (Mayser, Wegener, ect). It is has a totally different feel and look from Tonak velour.

Early Gordon

I got a "Velour Mens Irish Derby" on ebay. I was the only bidder for ten bucks.

As I suspected, it turned out to be an early fedora/homburg type hybrid.

Overall of hat. Wide overwelt brim edge.

Ribbon with intentionally frayed back edge

Genuine velour. The other hats of this style I've seen and own are all long napped finishes.

Size tag sticker on taped sweatband seam. String, instead of ribbon, bow

Size tag, reorder tag, union tag. Large union tag, as I've seen on other hats of this period Not sure when they switched over to the smaller ones, but it'd be nice to know for general dating purposes

Gordon tag. Anyone know anything about gordon?

That's a great-looking hat, Dinerman.

I have a 1896-1908 hat with the large union label, so it was sometime between then and 1934. I can't get you any closer than that right now. A lot of help I am, I know.lol

coincidence

What a coincidence. I just got back with a few hats today and one is very close to yours Dinerman. Its a dark brown, long hair, homburgish hat. It also has the frayed rear ribbon, large union tag, and taped rear sweat. I really thought the liner tip was way cool. "Society Club Hats Styles of Today with a touch of Tomorrow". They also have a guarantee on the reorder tag and the slogan on that also. Was made by Frank Katz Hat Co for Mattice - Foster Co in Ripon,Wi. I bought the hat very near the city of Ripon.

Hey! That looks a heckuva lot better on you than it ever did on me!

...on my end, I got 3 hats in the mail today from Optimo. Once the bashing is through, I'll post pics.

Portis Supreme

I've been trying to come up with a Portis and recently won 2 off the bay. The first one arrived and its sweet! Its a Portis Supreme in a great lighter brown. This is an unlined lid with a pug type ribbon. Ribbon looks original. Doesn't appear to have ever been worn. I really like the brim stitching on this one. Felt is also lightweight and feels very nice. The side shot is true to the color. Maybe Lefty has a matching ad......?

Thanks Mr. Paladin. It went right into my top ten. I wouldn't have thought that ribbon style would work, but it does for me.

My Stetson Colony came with a pug also and I thought it might be a bit strange but it has become one of my favorite hats as well. You have really posted some great hats lately; your collection is superb!

Dralon, cosmic war-lord!

No, just a hat:D . This arrived this morning; my dralon summer hat from Hat Centre. I had ordered white, but the owner of the store called me (long-distance, over-seas!) to tell me that they were sold out of white and to ask if I might like to choose another color. I chose grey, which is a versatile color.

Dralon appears to be a coarsely-woven polyester fabric. It responds very well to steam; re-shaping is a breeze (I gave the brim a bit more snap). I had assumed the sweat would be fabric, but in fact it is "leatherette". The brim measures 2 3/8".
It seems like it will be a very comfortable hat that will breathe and won't be ruined by rain.

Hah! I was thinking about buying one of those as well, either in grey or silver. Let me know if you think they are worth the money.

Oh, man -- what a great lid! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I love everything about that one, buler -- the brim stitching, the color, the style, and -- especially -- the ribbon treatment. Fantastic look, great condition. Well done!

...like a very practical hot weather hat. I'm also interested to hear how it does on a hot day.

Slightly off topic, but I like the notion of experimenting with new materials with improved breatheability, like using a better breathing, heat shedding liner for jackets.

I understand why they don't want to put an expensive sweatband in an economy hat model, but I do wish that the manufacturers would put some more thought into what feels good and works well on a hot day. I have a Dobbs straw with a leatherette band and I used a pin to poke several hundred holes in it.

I'd be interested in your impressions of your new hat too, JO, after you've given it some wear. I seem to have waited too late to start buying summer hats this year, and now I'm having trouble finding colors I'm interested in in my size. That looks like it might have some good potential.
