Royal Stetson - Light Tan

216E7B9C-D9ED-435B-AAEC-E3F71963DEB7.jpeg

Royal Stetson - Light Tan Felt
4 3/4 crown as bashed
1 3/4 Black Grosgrain Ribbon with brown and yellow feather
2 inch brim with simple underwelt edge
1 1/2 brown sweat

I’m enjoying this new arrival Royal Stetson stingy brim. It has a very soft light tan felt and a good solid 2 inch brim. Wearing this on a very hot day today... the light tan felt actually kept rather cool. No tags inside The sweat other than a return address sticker from previous owner... but I’ll guess late 60s on this one. A very comfortable.. easy to wear hat.

Harcfield Imperial Hats - Dynafelt

3833B09C-AA6F-4AC3-BC78-047B8AD18F38.jpeg

Harcfield Imperial Hats - Dynafelt
Medium to dark brown felt
4 3/4 crown
2 inch Greenish grosgrain ribbon
2 inch brim with matching Grosgrain bound Edge

Don’t know anything about this brand Harcfield or Dynafelt which seemed to be used on a wide array of hats over many years. I’m guessing a form or water repellant treatment for the felt. I accidentally left this hat and a couple others get hit with a downpour... this one the water beaded up much more so than the others. The felt I believe is a dark brown.. though in some light it has a greenish ting.. I think that may just be from the greenish ribbon. I do like the color combo and the bound edge offsets nicely. The sweat isn’t of the highest quality.. but still holding up. Didn’t find any manufacturing tags underneath it. The brim is right about 2 inches to the front.. maybe a hair under... about 1 7/8 on the sides. A nice wearing hat

Croydon - Supreme Quality

B003F577-1813-4E89-A740-3E7AD9BCB315.jpeg

Croydon - Supreme Quality - Medium Reddish Tan Felt
4 3/4 crown
1 1/2 Tan and Brown duo tone grosgrain ribbon treatment
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 grosgrain bound edge
1 7/8 soft brown sweatband

Croydon.. Another unknown (to me) Hat brand... but what a cool looking hat this is. Built in a sort of Whippet clone styling with the 2 1/2 brim 3/8 bound Edge. The real star of this hat is it’s Almost Musketeer like two-tone ribbon treatment. The felt is a beautiful medium tan that leans to reddish tones. There are just a couple moth nibs toward the top of the crown that do not go through and the up side of the brim shows a tiny bit of brushing marks... some of which I was able to work out. Inside there are the remnants of what looks like a yellowed cellophane liner tip. Might be some kind of hint on age. Other than this hat is almost perfect shape.. the sweat is nice and soft. I also what appears to be it’s factory bash in a beautiful tear drop shape.

I could not find really any info on Croydon As either a hat manufacturer or brand. I’m thinking though this could be a house brand. I’m getting a bit of a Lee Hats vibe off this one. Maybe others would have more thoughts on that.

This beauty arrived a couple weeks ago off a much appreciated tip from Jonathan @TheOldFashioned. I immediately surrendered the box to my wife to save for Father’s Day. After that day finally arrived yesterday I now get to experience The Whippet

Here are my impressions... I can say for sure... this is one very well made hat. The felt has an excellent quality feel to it. It is not as soft and malleable as my Royal Stetson “Musketeer” or older Stetson Standard Quality. It is a bit thicker and more dense but still very high quality feel and holds shape well with a hand crease. I’m sure with steam it would do any thing you wanted. The texture of the felt is very smooth and almost velvety to the touch. The big thing here are it’s lines and proportions... which are very distinct. This hat creates a very crisp look and I do see why it may be they are so sought after. So my impression is if you hear whippets are not what they are cracked up to be.. it is not that they are not an excellent.. well made hat from their era. They most definitely are. It is probably more so that you can find some equally fine or finer Stetsons From this era and older for less money if you look hard enough... especially considering what a whippet can go for price wise these days. I say if you have the chance to grab one at a decent price they are well worth the investment.

I was able to get a little story from the seller about the original owner of the hat. It belonged to the sellers father-in-law. He and his wife were a couple from New York. They did not have a lot of money but they preferred to save up to buy nice things. This hat being one example. He was able to send me a photo of the gentleman wearing a Homburg hat.

Man, you have been hauling in some true beauties! This Whippet looks outstanding. Really, all of them do, and I dig the linen flat cap. Excellent.

Thanks man! Much appreciated. I have had a nice run of luck as late... along with some great tips from fellow lounge members. Also it’s given me a bit of sanity and something to do in the midst everything that is going and not going on as of late. Hope you are doing well.

Good gets Jeff! I really like the turquoise / quill band on the Rand. I've liked those older 3X American Hat Co. hats since I first saw Harv's and the Resistol is a nice bonus as well.
Thanks! That's one of the bands I made years ago. It's very crude, but uses all natural materials, including sinew, and the shark's tooth is one I found as a child, that my parents eventually had drilled by a jeweler and sent it to me.

For the heck of it... Here is the travel-mate of yesterday’s Croydon

A no name cross hatched pattern fabric hat with a big ol red plum emanating from what appears to be a vase shaped hat pin. Probably plucked from the men’s dept of any random department store anytime over the last 3 or 4 decades. Enjoy.

^ Okay, so that cross-hatch pattern is maybe not the most desirable for a hat, but the hat itself looks like it's in good condition and doesn't look bad on you. So, what the heck, wear it once in a while and have fun with it!

Dumb luck! I bought this as a rescue hat “knowing“ it was a 6 3/4. It has some moth damage, but no through holes and Vita-Felt hats need to be saved. I thought I’d at least get my money out of it by flipping it. As soon as I opened the box I knew this was no 6 3/4!

The liner appears to have been removed at one point and has tabs used to reattach it. I don’t see any mention of Vita-Felt or Vita-Felt Process on the sweatband, but the sweat and the liner are both “Royal Stetson De Luxe.”

Wormser 3X Quality / Ten Star Quality.

Nice example of the Rosetta Stone of hats (the link between star and 'X' quality). I can see the blue. Wish it fit me too!

I'll take dumb luck any day! I certainly would have thought that was a 6-3/4 as well with just the fraction. Congrats!

Wormser 3X Quality / Ten Star Quality. The crown is soft and similar to comparably aged Open Roads, but the brim is rather firm. I don’t mind it at all and it gives it a more rugged character. The felt has an ice blue tint to it that’s hard to capture. I sure wish it was my size.
o_O Wow. I keep coming back to look at this one.

And it's my size.
