Yes, Cavanagh did not put their felted edge on all their hats. I have a couple with bound edge and even one with a over-welt. As for people cutting brims down (or having them cut down), happened a LOT in the late 50's and into the 60's (and even earlier, they were cutting down brims in the 20's from the earlier wider brim fedoras) when people wanted to "update" their hats into the "latest Styles" as the hat shops and cleaners would say.......THIS hat does not look at all like one of those as you say.......
GREAT finds!!!!! I am constantly amazed by your finds....but then seeing your street vendors......we have not had those over here for some time.......Here is a pic from my collection I have been meaning to post for some time...April 1950. View attachment 194952

Borsalino in uranio colour made for the American market. Size 59, with the bound brim at 5,5cm and crown 10cm at the center dent.

Here's an interesting one.
Alessandria fedora. Size 56, with the brim at 5,7cm and the crown 10 cm at the center dent. The styling of this hat very much says Borsalino. Judging by the size tag though the most likely maker is Cervo. Not all that odd, because Cervo did on occasion make hats for Borsalino. The styling is all there, but the felt is less refined than a real Borsalino. The sweatband is a cheaper one as well.

Dunlap Spaceweight Saturn 2 in space gray. Size 56 with the bound brim at 5,2cm and the crown 10,5 at the center dent. Very nice little sixties hat. The liner is what makes it for me.

A good shape and look to that Dunlap, Stefan. I like the pin, but as you say, the liner does it. A very cool piece of space race 60s fashion. Great find.

My new weekend arrival. The Dobbs Gay Prince.

I did not know anything about this line of Dobbs hats other than I’ve seen them go for a pretty penny from time to time. So when I had a chance to grab this one for a song because it’s whip stitch thread is unraveling... I had to go for it.

I had asked Dr Max his opinion of the felt on these and he gave them a thumbs up. But I still didn’t know what to expect.

Holy moly. When I opened the box and put my hands on this beauty I was stunned at how thin and light and soft this hat is. I’ve held some fairly nice hats. But nothing has come close to the way this felt feels in your hands.

The brim is about 2 3/4 with a gold whip stitch trim and has a matching 3/4” felt hat band with whip stitch trim as well. The somewhat rakish Crown currently sits at about 4 3/4 in front and about 4 in the back.

Outside of the unraveled stitching on the brim and some foxing on the liner it looks real clean. The felt looks i don’t see any moth bites and the sweat is very clean and soft.

I get the impression from the manufacturer tag... this might be a bit older. Any thoughts on age?

I haven’t had the chance to take my own photos yet.. so these from the seller will do for now.

I thought I would post an update on this one as I now managed to get around to replacing the whip-stitching on my Dobbs Gay Prince. The tread I found that matched closest in color was a quilting thread that was a bit of a thicker braid than the original and after some consideration I decided to forgo the double thread and just go with a single thread for the stitching. The double thread actually looked very nice.... but it was just a bit “too much” in my opinion. The photos with the late afternoon sun make the new thread appear a bit more copper than the original.. but to me in person the color is a lot closer.

For now I will keep the floofy poofy chicken feather [emoji1787]

Cool Stefan. I think Champ also made one they called space weight that hat similar look to this one with space themed liner and pin. Enjoy!
