So I like hats that have a store or person's name stamped on them. I enjoy digging up the history associated it. Sort of gives the hat an extra dimension of character. It also serves as a reminder that the hat existed long before me, and with proper stewardship, it will have a life after me as well. I'm just the temporary owner at this moment in time.

Grady's in Jacksonville, TX was an independent shop that lasted roughly 30 years, from the late 40s until 1980. The only article I was able to find was actually written by a middle school student and archived by The Texas Historian, whose uncle happened to work there as a teen himself back in the 70s:

Grady Nutt was the owner. Maybe that name is familiar to some, but if you do a search you'll come up with hits for Grady Nutt, comedian, of "Hee Haw" fame. Well, he was actually Grady L. Nutt, son of Grady C. Nutt, hatter in Jacksonville, TX.

As a kid, I can remember lying on the floor under the table at my grandparents house while the adults played cards and watched "Hee Haw" and "The Lawrence Welk Show." I can't say I recollect any of Grady's bits from the show, but the connection struck me as interesting enough to go ahead and buy the hat. Tomorrow I head north for a small family reunion this weekend for all the grandkids. Not everyone will be able to make it, but there will be family coming from both coasts, and others I haven't seen in probably 20 years. Maybe I'll bring my new hat.

And that is that.
That is just so cool! I love hats with history, or a story to tell.

Second hat arrived today, and first, night and day difference in packing:

The hat was properly packed in a hat box and taped shut, then surrounded by moulded styrofoam (like new electronics), and placed inside this massive shipping box. Additional gaps were filled with loose stuffing. Hands down the best treatment I've ever seen, so kudos to the seller.

And now, for the hat:

Clocking in at a 4" brim it just meets @Joao Encarnado's minimum requirements, but it's easily the biggest in my humble collection. Stands 5" tall in the front at the base of the center crease, and sports a two-ply black ribbon. Haven't made my mind up on the feather but I'm actually leaning towards keeping it right now.

And now for moment of truth:

Brim is a little wonky and will need a bit of reshaping, but all in all I like it. Part 2 regarding the story associated with it to follow below.

I like it. The weave is interesting and I like my straw hats to have lots of ventilation just like this does.

That's a real cool hat. I love the designs in the weave. I've never seen one quite like it before.

Steve, Again great to see this one! It's definitely made of Wool but hard to describe. I am not sure any of these Karl Misik (Kami) will appear again especially NOS. They have a great look and I really enjoy mine.
Thanks again, Steve. It is indeed a very comfortable hat to wear. Added bonus that it's somewhat rare.

Super find Old Fashioned, thanks for sharing. It does indeed give a hat an extra dimension if you can find something about it's history, maker/shop/owner(s) etc.
Enjoy your family reunion.

I stopped into Greely Hat Works and couldn’t help but make an off the shelf purchase.
Very cool shop with very nice employees!
They are a full custom operation but sell a lot of premade straws too. Off the shelf hats “have been used in photo shoots, etc.,” and I tried a couple I really liked, and left with a hare’s felt Western homburg that fit nearly perfectly until he steamed it to perfection for me!
Granite Grey with matching ribbon and bound edge. You can see a tack stitch here and there, but the most interesting part is that it appears shaped backwards from what I would normally do. That is to say the dent is lower in the back, and the brim dip is as well, but it’s very subtle and I know I’m going to enjoy this one!
I almost went with this little beaver topper but I think I made the right choice.

Very nice new one. Ya did good and it looks like you are already taking it on adventures!
What are the measurements on the hat?

It was tempting. But I need to reserve enough credit to get my kids and I back home! I generally avoid using credit to make hat purchases, so I have to be careful! [emoji51]It had a really nice hand and I would have loved to shape the brim a bit. Maybe another 1/4 inch and I would have bit the bullet.

Georg, my advice, keep the hat and find another wedding present. That is a cool Mayser Stetson.
