Stetson Standard Quality sold to me by our very own Richard Morgan. The sweatband is shot, but it's comfortable to wear, so I left it as is. I like the proportions and the felt. Richard's listing said it is from the 1930s.

I am really happy with this one. It was badly crushed and misshapened when I got it, even worse than the seller's pics. I just spent over an hour steaming and ironing the felt and the ribbon over a wooden block, and I think it turned out nice.

After some sketchy roundabout travel courtesy of the USPS (Northville, MI - suburb of Detroit --> Pittsburgh --> Detroit --> NW Indiana), my Hurd's derby arrived today a day late:

Dates somewhere between 1925 and 1934. Hurd's opened in 1908 and expanded to second East Lansing location in 1925. Union label is the pre-merger in 1934.

The hat body, ribbon, and binding are in mint condition. The sweatband is almost completely detached, but is extremely supple. Should be a relatively easy fix. Good opportunity to practice.

Not bad for $7 I think, plus seller threw in a Champ hat box.

Thanks! I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison with my Stetson from similar timeframe. Just an eye test led to a quick measurement of the brim width. The Stetson came in at 2" and this one from Hurd's was 2.25". It'll be interesting to compare and contrast the two hats.

Stetson One-Hundred arrived. It needs a cleaning, but no mothing or other damage. I’m splurging on a couple gallons of new Naptha as what I have is brown despite my filtering efforts. I’ll post more once it’s cleaned and presentable.

First I’m scrubbing the ribbon and binding with a toothbrush and some old-school Crest toothpaste. The liner is coming out before the bath and it won’t go back in before I finish reconditioning the sweat (it just has a couple of small cosmetic issues).

The felt most closely resembles the Churchill 50 I/we had, but I’d give the edge to the Churchill.

I usually do a very light application of mink oil on the back side of the sweat and the front gets a couple light coats of Pecards. I’ve tried other conditioners but this is the regiment I’ve found to work best for me.

Plain Crest toothpaste works wonders.
That’s some old school trick i learned when i was in the Suck.
Liner looks pretty good so that’s sweet.
Ps: be carefull withe the Crest. It can leave a somewhat blueish tint if not rinsed well. Little is better.

I am aware of the common household uses for toothpaste, but I am curious why you guys emphasize using the Crest brand?

Which Pecards do you use? I have 3 different kinds, regular, antique and finished leather.
