Hey Brent:
I commented on these cause i noticed you were buying a bunch of cowboys and converting to fedoras. Cutting them down or just flattening them out. I said my gosh those are big, then they started growing on me. I have a black Borsa with a 3 3/4 brim that i just don’t have the stones to wear but i’m gettin em. Maybe. Ha How wide it the Black Beaver brim? Might have to name that style “The Brent”. Ha
Be well. Bowen

Hey Bowen,
The black Beaver Brand started life with a four inch brim. After a few seconds thought, I trimmed it down to 3.25”. I’m seeing how far I can take the brims and for me three inches wasn’t a problem.

I know some (most?) won’t like them, and I’m not giving up my more traditional sized hats, but I like these big boys. They also do offer more sun protection. I don’t really feel comfortable in “cowboy” hats so these simple conversions are perfect for me. As a bonus, western donor hats are cheap and sturdy if if not refined.

And I’m honored to have a hat style named after me. :)

His old Beaver Brand western was given some new life. I’m not sure it qualifies for the Conversion Corral as all I did was some reshaping and trimming down the brim. This one was lower crowned than some of my recent conversions: 6.0” open with just a bit of taper.

Like so many of my projects, this one will get a new ribbon once my grosgrain order comes in.

@AbbaDatDeHat : I don’t think that I’d make any permanent alterations to your black Borsalino. I like it as it is, but if you get a wild hair...?

I trimmed the brim to 3.25 inches, partially reblocked the crown (I did not remove the sweat); ironed, steamed, and shaped the brim; steamed the crown to open and spent several minutes removing the remnants of the old factory crease (lots of steam).

I don’t know that I would have ever wore it as a western, but as a western/fedora hybrid I’m sure it will get some head time (in colder months).

As an observation: This Beaver Brand has some very nice dense felt and is MUCH nicer than the Resistol 3X, 4X, and 5X hats I usually convert. I’ll be looking for more of these.
