Weren't straw boaters part of the raccoon-coat, boola-boola craze?

Trends come and go, as we all know, but for 20 or so years straw boaters were the go-to summer hat for men of all ages worn with casual or dress attire.

Stetson New York LE – Excellent Quality. Actual 5 ¾” open crown. 2 ¾” welted brim. (Stats state 5 ½” and 2 5/8” respectively). Phantom Grey. I’m not used to wearing such a wide brim, but I figured I’d give it a try. Given the crown on my last Stetson, the Nostalgia, shrank considerably, the brim size on this one should let me reblock it nicely if need be. I have to say it really is markedly different than any other modern Stetson I’ve handled. Seems very nice.

Picked it up today at Heimie's Haberdashery in St. Paul. I've never actually bought a hat in person before!

The first of two that just arrived from Italy, bought from our own Daniele Tanto so I knew they are great hats before ever handling them.
This is a NOS Borsalino from the 80's, a very soft, luxurious medium-long haired felt that is very pleasing to the touch and high quality in all regards. Folks who don't believe that Borsalino was still producing hats to high standards in this time really need to feel this one.
The brim is 2 1/4", the open crown is about 5 1/2". It is just a tad large, but I'm confident I can fix that.

I got a couple of head shots with sonewhat decent light.

I'm sure you will be seeing more of this one in the future!

Picked up my first ever hat a couple of days ago at a second hand store. It was green with a yellow ribbon which i wasnt that fond of but i liked the shape of it. Since it was practically a giveaway i bought despite of the problems. I have no idea of its age but its probably pretty old. On the inside its says Lock Co Hatters. Anyway I gave it some modification which I think turned out pretty good. The only thing im not really sure about is if i should put a wider ribbon on, what do you guys think?

I think that ribbon looks just about right.

Here is one of my "new" hats. A snap brim pork pie from the late 40's early 50's I believe. Advertised as a new "city hat with a casual country look". Theses were made by most of the companies at that time. Brushed it up and wore it yesterday! I also got a Lee "water block" in the same exact style but in grey. Will post pictures after I clean it up a bit.........

Could be that late but has a 2 1/4 inch brim with the old jagged keyhole fractional size tag.....felt is very nice, and has a 2 1/4 inch band with back bow. Almost a straight crown. Really matches the specs of the ads.....
But, it is a common type hat worn for a long time......I certainly can be wrong.....so much conflicting information on dating these hats, knowing when they changed their tags and crests....I will accept your dating to early 60's. Still a great hat I am happy to own.
