Stetson "Medalist" Panama, Crown 5 inches, Brim 2 1/8 inches . I picked this one up at the Stetson Garland Outlet for about $60.00. It doesn't have a size tag (measures around 7 1/4 / 58cm) or paper label so it might be a prototype. I think it has a nice form and has a nice Cuenca weave especially for the price.

That's actually a VERY nice straw body for $60. Looks like what Stetson (Hatco) would call their Grade 20 panama. Interesting though, the woven edge is not something I have seen on modern Stetson straws because most of them are stitched and cut. The Stetson "Medalist" designation wasn't so much a model name as it was a line name. I have seen vintage felts and straws with the Medalist sweatband stamp, and all seem to be "mid grade" hats with some flair to them (fancy ribbon, etc.) I am unsure what price point they were listed at in the 50's, but they were nice hats. The sweatband stamp seen here is the EXACT same stamp that Stetson used in the 40's/50's because Matt Deckard (Joseph) told me once that Hatco has a good amount of original sweatband stamp dies that date from the original Stetson of Philadelphia.

Here are two pictures from Matt Deckard's Instagram account that show your hat.....but I do believe this specific model was a prototype.

Photobucket hasn't been working for a few days so I'm going to try to upload some pictures of a new hat directly to this site. We'll see if this works.

According to internet sources, Sampter opened his shop in 1928 and Townsend Grace stopped making hats in 1953. The shape of this hat and the short brim make me suspect a date in the 1950s. The only thing that makes me think it might be earlier is the mesh liner.

The straw is surprisingly light and the weave lets in some air.
