I got a box today with 2 hats from Peters Bothers in Fort Worth Tx.

First I unboxed a black beauty.

In front of my eyes it looks closer to Black Cherry than pure black, the craftmanship is outstanding, I could not find a flaw on the hat.

Then there is the diamond shaped crown, perfect to me, perfect fit on 7 1/2, with a nice all leather sweatband, as comfortable as it can get.

Then the Burgundy ribbon, it is full of life and combines great with the reddish tones of the hat, it is a high contrast ribbon that somehow blends perfectly with the hat.

Overall, a great hat for the price, and, if you consider you are buying from a privately owned store, more a family owned store, that has beed forever in the hat market it makes a great acquisition !!

Then I took out of the bottom of the box another PB'S hemp hat, now in,a volor they call natural, a very light beige, I would say close to some Silverbellys, real nice workmanship again.

This one is a centerdent that wont get closer to the top of my head due to the tall or full crown.

Also perfect fit with a high quality leather sweatband, I irdered this one with a white pug, @Bob Roberts, a nice combo makes it for a very elegant but also not so formal hat.

The whole hat plus puggaree image makes this hat worth of a 1800's british landlord in Kenya, makes me want to go buy a Land Rover Defender.

Also very, very happy with the hat, i put it in my head and has been there all day long.

It was missing the sticky back PB'S logo, I told them about it and they were happy to mail a couple for me.

Also a real nice high quality hat.

They sure did a beautiful diamond on that baby. Love the proportions and color scheme.

Steve, I'm interested in the stitching around the top of the ribbon. Is that to protect the ribbon during shipping (from crushing/wrinkling)? The haberdasher would remove it upon sale of the hat?
Yes the basting stitches are for protecting the ribbon. I was told they should be removed but I don't remove them from old hats. :)
The other day I visited Petitgas, an old hat shop in CPH, to check some new Maysers. I noticed, that Mayser still stitch the ribbon along the top :)

I have never seen any hard evidence, but my personal theory is, that the cross-stitches, often seen on back-bows and some shark's gills, also were meant for temporary support - supposed to be removed in the store.

Those cross' always seemed so off to me. Often they were done in a color, foreign to the hat's color scheme - and just as often they contribute to a "sloppy" look, hanging loosely around the center of the cross.

I really can't see this type of cross-stitching of bows do anything pleasant to the look of a hat. I therefore settled on the theory, that they were just temporary(?) :)

I am in agreement. The bow edges are suppose to be free.

TONAK Nový Jičín "Lestand", size 58cm, NOS condition with mothing, probably later 1950s (former JHS main factory). The crown is 5 1/2 inches open with a 2 3/8 inch brim. The felt is stiff but can be hand formed with steam. I am sure this by design so could be color finish related. This one is from my latest Czech find.

Janyška, 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 inches, NOS condition, probably late 1930s early 1940s. The felt is really nice (light weight) and easily dry creases. Also like that it doesn't have a liner which is less common for this style hat. Overall great form! Janyška & Cie. (located in Valašské Meziříčí – Krásno about 25 km from Nový Jičín) were unusual because the company was founded in the 1920s and owned by a Czech. The historic hat companies (JHS, AP,BB) in Neustitschein / Nový Jičín were Austrian / German owned and founded in the mid 19th Century. This one is from my latest Czech find.

Janyška "Praga", 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 inches, NOS condition with some mothing, probably late 1930s early 1940s. The felt has more of a Chamois finish in a great blue color (will look better in natural light). Also has an interesting shortened sweatband (also color coordinated) and no liner so wears light. I really like this one!
