TheDane - great link ^
You're welcome. I guessed you would be interested in a collection of historic London-shots :)
On the same surf I found another great page with pictures by L.W.Hine, showing US child workers 1908-1912. It's loaded with great caps! I'll throw the link in 'The Cap Faction' after writing this.
Great Cavanagh, btw. It looks like it just passed the doorstep of the shop. I'm not fond of stingy brims for my own long, skinny face - but I'm amazed how fantastic you wear them. They seem made for you ;)

Robert,

Is this the hat on eBay that the seller said her granny used to wear?
That was my thought too, and a small check showed us right. That hat is a true gem! Congratulations Robert

Thanks TheDane.

-------

New arrival Dunn & Co 'English Velour' trilby - roughly 22 brim, and 5 1/2" open crown.

Sweat (typical thin cardboard like leather) and liner shows no sign of wear. Will need a bit of steam & reshaping, and a decent brush up, but is pretty much as new.

Difficult to date (if anyone knows anything about the liner prints and their respective dates please let me know!), but the liner is stitched rather than glued, and I'm guessing late 50's through to the 60's.

It's a beauty, and caught my eye also. I wonder what other treasures Robert found while it went unpurchased a couple of times? (Really, I would like to see those hats). I had low cash flow at the time or would have grabbed it up myself - I've not seen another like it... Glad you got it Robert. It's one for the museum...

I have not had to change any settings on the last update to Tapatalk 2 . I need to do a screencast and post it here on how to post with tapatalk. If people would think it would be helpful.

New Huckle 'Supreme' (Tonak)

Roughly 3" brim and 5" crown (bashed).

Nice felt - but not what I'd call lightweight. A basic cloth sweatband, and the ribbon work is perfunctory.

At the price it could be worth the effort of having a leather sweat installed and the ribbon replaced.

I've no complaints for a £19 fur-felt hat. Ari still has them listed in the clearance section on the Hat Centre web site.

For reference I went for an XL which is labelled 61, but fits more like a 60.

It's interesting that they (TONAK) are using an old JHS logo design on the tip patch. The felt is actually a mix of pre dyed rabbit / hare furs. I visited TONAK back in 2011. The old JHS factory (felt production to finished hat) is still in operation but only running at 20% capacity. They still have all the old wooden blocks and flanges (in the 1000s) but they don't use them anymore. Also all kinds of specialized finishing machines. Their branded market is at the lower end since they can't compete with Borsalino and Stetson (TONAK higher end hats are actually well made and at a much lower price point). They also produce the Velour finishes (hoods to complete hats) for the Jewish Orthodox sector. They also are a major supplier of Fez. They told me they were the only ones with the correct color dye (JHS was the major Fez maker back in the day). They are also a major supplier of processed rabbit / hare fur and hat bodies / hoods (I saw the production of natural white rabbit fur felt bodies). They actually own rabbit farms in the Czech republic and Russia. If TONAK went out of business (which hopefully will not happen) it would an amazing sell off of hat machinery (felt production to finished hats). There is no place like it left on earth!

It's a little too hot for felt over here at the moment, so I've been wearing my latest acquisition - a Borsalino hemp trilby. I guess if I get bored with it, I could always smoke it ;)

P.S. I'm also a Man of Kent

Nice colour mix - great for a coastal stroll in the sun.

Whereabouts in Kent?
