It's been awhile since I took a stroll down the Portis Path. 1940's Portis Sterling. They sure had some wonderful color combinations at Portis.

Wonderfull Portis Robert. Great ribbon.
Was about to have an @40Cal crease withdrawal but i’m good now. Thanks
Oddly, your Portis reminds me of a Portis billboard in some artwork i once saw. Still waiting for more.
Always good to see your posts.
Be well. Bowen

Thank you Bowen! One of the first hats I purchased was a Portis..... I'm still quite partial to their designs.

Portis New Slant tissue weight in a very nice brown/taupe colour. Size 56 (American 7) with the bound brim at a good 6,5cm and the crown 10cm at the front pinch. I tried to discover what the "new slant" on this hat would be. It came creased with a strong rake front to back, which was not my cup of tea. It took it to open crown and steamed to to see where it would go and this is where I ended up. Not much of a slant to be seen, but a lovely hat anyway. It has lost its liner (there are some glue marks inside under the sweat). The ribbon is what makes the hat stand out.
Apparently a tissue weighs 100 grams (who knew?).

Does the Union label give any clues about its age?

2-5/8"+ wide brim with bound edge to match crown. As creased 5" at front center 3-3/4" at rear. Thin and soft 2-1/8" unreeded sweatband. Navy and Medium Gray goes or clashes with anything.

I know you’re not currently active here, but man this hat is great and others need to see it. Your contributions are greatly missed.

Sorry, Mark. I forgot all about you and I already listed it on eBay. I’m doing my best to buy five and sell six so my hat clutter isn’t so overwhelming. Sometimes I wonder how this happened…usually I wonder that while trawling the vintage market for more hats!
Too bad, I was hoping to finally close that trade deal we have been working on for two years.....
;)

Anyone know where this logo falls in the Portis timeline?

There is a typically '20s/'30s looking bowler earlier in the thread that has it on the sweat.

Some more of the hat in question:

Excuse the dust -- I still need to clean it.

This store stamp is the only marking on the sweat. It has an "old" look to it, but the store (around since 1910) might have had one made up and used it for decades. I've found no factory sticker behind the sweat, but need to condition it for a deeper dive to see if there is a union label.

I got this Portis Royal Quality a while back, but it needed a bit of cleaning -- and still needs some steaming. One of the few size 7-3/8 that fit me!
