Population By Hat Size?

As a person who wears a size 7 7/8 hat I have come to understand that I am in the minority. I have always wondered if there was ever some research on the distribution of hat sizes across the population of adult males. I also wonder if there is any research that might indicate hat sizes trending toward larger sizes in the last 30-40 years when compared with, say 100 years ago.

Interesting question! After some Googling, I finally found a US Army report on the body measurements of their personnel (www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc). The following data (which took from the report, measurement # 61 - they measured EVERYTHING) is the percentage of the population at various head circumferences, ie, for the 1st percentile 1% of the population are below that measurement.

For comparison, 6 3/4 = 21.2, 7 = 22, 7 1/4 = 22.8, 7.5 = 23.5, 7 3/4 = 24.3 approximately. So, less than 1% of the male population has a head as big as yours.

I thought it'd be interesting to do a poll within the ranks of FL'ers to tabulate our head sizes. Has that been done yet?

MJL: I wonder the same thing. Yesterday I was looking at a very old (1910's to 1920's) fuzzy stetson with original box in an antique store, and the box had size squares to check off. This was a 7 3/8, but i noticed the squares only went up to 7 3/4.

Thanks, Zetwal! So according to those results, we FL'ers don't correlate to the military's population. Not even close in the mid-sizes. But the largest ones are near the same.

I couldn't find it but I thought there was a post here showing hat inventory guide that showed stocking levels for 7 1/8, 7 1/4, and 7 3/8 as the sizes with highest suggested order quantity

Yeah, we discuss this periodically, particularly the woes of those of us trying to find large and/or irregular shaped hats. I have a lot of difficulty, as a 7 3/4 Long Oval.
