I've heard baby oil is a good cheap additive, I know some people that slick their hair down with just that (mineral oil is in a lot of hair dressings.) I tried just the baby oil, as a thrifty guy, but It's no good if you're trying for a pomp or anything. You need something thicker. I use Brylcreem on the top and baby oil in the sides, if I'm out of Hair Tonic, works pretty slick, no pun intended.

I found the Groom and Clean at Walmart.

I was a die-hard Murrays guy until I started using the following:

The B&W is easier to work with compared to Murray's, it's got a lighter hold but works just fine for me.

Layrite Superhold Pomade, this stuff doesn't flake up and washes right out but it is pricey!..

I get it at wal mart or walgreens its usually right in with all the mens shaving supplys, aftershaves. I love it, best stuff out there that doesnt build up in your hair

Just received this in the mail today. Looks to be a nice pomade that will do the job without a lot of hassle and mess.
It contains beeswax, carnauba, castor oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, (proven to actually be good for one's hair and scalp), and a very light scent consisting of clove, geranuium, bergamont, and rosemary. Even contains vitamin E.
The best part is that it's water soluble, NO petroleum by-products.
Seems very much like American Crew products, but without the strange odor that so many may find disagreeable. The consistency is about like American Crew also.
Last but not least, the container has a nifty art deco label.

I will post an update to this review after I actually use it, but so far so good. It has all the attributes I was looking for in a pomade.

I have been using it for a couple of months. I really like it. I switched from American Crew promade to this. I find it interesting that you say it has the same consistency. My Crew was a very firm gel-like consistency and I could just run my fingers through it and put it in my hair.

My tin of Daper Man is solid and I have to hit it with a hair dryer to soften it up for application. That's my only problem with the product. That extra step sometimes irritates me when I'm in a hurry in the morning.

Mine is waxier than the AC, and not clear but cloudy. No doubt due to a higher content of waxes. It is just a bit stiffer than AC too, but not so much as to cause any difficulty in getting it out of the can. Maybe they have reformulated it slightly since you got your can?
It is the right stuff though, for me anyway.

Well, I couldn't find the Groom and Clean locally (gonna order some from the web), so I picked up some Krew Komb from Sally's to tide me over....it was recommended by my barber, and so far, it's pretty good stuff...not too greasy, washes out with water, and holds pretty well.

I'm going to try a can of the DapperMan, too....

Might as well post here to avoid starting an unnecessary thread.

I've been using pomade (most Dax Wax with some Murray's original here and there) for a few years now, and I've also been using Brylcreem for hotter weather (no sense in having all that wax in yer hair if it's going to melt).

Just this year I began combining the two. I'd massage in my normal amount of pomade, then I'd comb in a slightly conservative amount of Brylcreem.

Absolutely love the combination. It gives the control and hold of pomade and the sheen and suaveness of Brylcreem.

Here's the problem:

THIS STUFF WRECKS MY SCALP.

Even if I wash it out at the end of the night, my scalp is itchy, red, and all sorts of distressed. Normally, I'll wash all the product out of my hair at the end of the month with liberal amounts of olive oil, but after using this on a semi-regular basis, I would have to change the oil (if you will) in my hair at least bi-weekly.

Is there a product out there that can match the results of pomade with Brylcreem sans the scalp irritation?

So I have been running into a bit of an issue down here in Florida. I have really thick hair and use a ton of Murrays to get a pomp, use some layrite and pomades every now and again but nothing seems to be able to handle this central florida humidity. Any tips or suggestions? I just moved here from NYC and it is quite the adjustment. Not getting any hold and I'll sweat like a dog and it just melts away!

DerMann, I had the same problem a couple years back. It didn't go away until I switched away from using Dax. I tried it once more last year and, sure enough, the irritation quickly returned. The only pomade I have used that doesn't irritate my scalp is the High Life series. I give it my highest recommendation.

Dapper Man Pomade

How do I use it? The 'melt-down' method, then grab a bit with a finger tip and run it through my hair and comb? Or get a bit on my fingertip as is, and run through and comb? It seems soft enough to work with it without heat, but I don't want those little 'streaks' of pomade to get tangled in my hair. Any tips?

I get out of the shower and towel dry my hair. Then I hit the Dapper Man with the hair drier to "melt" it. I dip my fingers in and run it through my hair. I use it rather sparingly. Then I used a fine comb to style my hair. It works for me.

I've been using Dapper-Man for about six months. It is the bes that I have tried. I run a wet comb through my hair to wet it a bit. Then I rub in about a dime size bit of Dapper-Man. It holds very well and washes out. It does not smell funny either. What's not to love?

So I switched to SGB in the blue can. Little lighter but I'm noticing that my hair is falling out. Not just when I comb it, if I run my fingers through my hair I get several hairs. I have a lot of hair and I generally don't notice and falling out. Not until I started using pomades.

Anyone have any suggestions? It's not to the point where its noticeable but I don't want to get to that point.

Any heavy pomade tears my hair out because I have thick afro hair, but if you have straight or wavy hair it shouldn't unless your rough with the comb - maybe you're balding (just asayin')? Or pomade has some bad medical effect on your hair...try for a while without it and see what happens

So I've taken several days off from using pomade. Complete change in my hair. It's no longer falling out. That's a plus. The downside is I have been using Axe-something-or-other and it's got crap hold.

It's almost as if the real pomade was irritating my scalp and caused my hair to fall out. That's too bad. I really liked pomade.

I'm assuming that the issue is the wax clogged my pores. Do we have a consensus on whether or not the water-soluble stuff is worth the money? I believe Layrite is the only water-soluble stuff I've seen.

I only wear my hair slicked back. I wouldn't be opposed to other options like Brylcreem or Groom and Clean but from over here....it takes forever to get here and shipping. So I'm trying to decide Layrite or Brylcreem....any thoughts?

wax irritates my scalp also, so I switched to Redken Men's pomade, and thus far, its worked great. Great hold and no irritation, plus that nice pomade smell.
