Pocket Knife

A friend gave me this pocket knife. I know it's old but all the engraving is wore off so I don't know the brand.

I carry a Case medium stockman with clip, spey, and sheepsfoot blades. Depending on what I’m wearing, I either carry it in the right front trouser pocket with my keys or in my right waistcoat pocket. I don’t like the look of square bolsters, so had to specifically search out one with round. It has bone handles; I would have preferred stag, but they only seem to offer the stag-handled knives in stainless steel. All in all, it’s been a good knife so far.

I also carry a Leatherman Juice S2 multitool, which has everything you need and nothing you don’t. It has a knife, scissors, bottle/can opener, pliers, wire cutters, three flat-head screwdrivers (one fits my spectacles), one Phillips screwdriver, and a lanyard ring. At one time, I used to wear the tool on the other end of my watch chain via the ring. Right now, it goes in my right outside jacket pocket.

Although I have other knives, these two are the ones I’ve settled on for everyday carry for now.

On Saturday I'll be attending the annual Chap Olympiad. This year, I've decided to go in Highland dress, so I'll be carrying a Sgian Dhub in my kilt hose - a permitted exception to the general rules on carrying knives in the UK, specifically written into statute.

To me Case is the best and holds edge better. All deck crew (Boatswain Mates) in USN are required to have a knife on their belt and Case is #1 choice.

I have a small collection of Laguiole knives from France and one of them is my daily carry. Fontenille Pataud is the best manufacturer I have come across. Their quality is very good as the Laguile/Thiers knives can vary in quality of workmanship. Plus there are a many Asian fakes available esp on Ebay.

I rarely leave home without a trusty pocketknife, as they come in handy for all sorts of daily cutting chores...

I visit lots of charity shops antique shops and Antique Fairs and can’t resist a bargain. Living in Sheffield where billions of knives were made makes trawling for them rather easier than elsewhere. Apologies if I’ve posted these images elsewhere - it’s an age thing (memory? At 65 I’m entering the age of wonder - I wonder what day it is? Etc etc.

I love Sheffield knives I used to collect the small dirks or daggers they made had close to 100 of them do you ever come across any?

I often see the small Bowie style ‘Scout Knives’ they sell for around £20-£25. Daggers (double edged) like the Fairburn Sykes Commando style cost a good deal more but you can still buy them new £53.50 from the Famous Sheffield Shop. https://www.sheffield-made.com/

I tried to stick to ones made from 1840 to roughly 1914. The so called gamblers or prostitutes dirks

I’ll keep a look out for them, but I doubt I’ll see any of the ‘push dagger’ style as these are illegal in the U.K. - as are flick knives, butterfly knives and knuckle dusters/knuckle duster knives.

Some nice pieces in that shop; tempted by the 3.5" Lefty Lambsfoot knife.

Interestingly they don’t make an ambidextrous single blade pocket knife, perhaps it’s not just as simple as grinding a thumbnail slot on both sides of the blade?

I enjoy a nice knife, but think that maybe
.000001% of the population has any business carrying it for self defense. Imho thats the least useful tool function in a knife. In the US, if your life is in peril, there is a gun at the other end of that trouble. Remember what Sean Connery said about knifes and gunfights in The Untouchables.

A number of years ago I watched a French film..."The Gardener"....a story about an effete artist that befriends a retired railroad man that became his gardener. A wonderful touching story.....The Gardeners advice to the artist was "a man need always carry a knife and a small ball of twine in his pocket". If he fails to then he not prepared as a man needs to be. The gardener passes and of course the final scene shows the artist in a time of need (tieing the wrap on one of his paintings) pulling the knife and the twine from his jeans pocket. Validated the reasons for carrying my knife......none of which have anything to do with self defense.

Great story about the knife and twine; I would round that out with matches/lighter (and I do not smoke) and a small flashlight. Anyone who works outdoors or with their hands will find plenty of uses for all of these.

Never had one of those, but I always do carry a pen, too. It looks compact; how well does it balance for writing for any length of time? Any particular model/manufacturer you like?

The cap goes on the back. Becomes pretty standard length. Makes even my chicken scratch legible.
